Bulgaria bans neo-Nazi event after public outcry

Authorities in Bulgaria on Saturday banned an annual torch-lit march in downtown Sofia in honor of a late general who led the pro-Nazi Union of Bulgarian National Legions during World War II. Hours before the event, the country’s chief prosecutor called on Sofia’s mayor and the interior minister “to ensure the preservation of public order and protection of the rights of the public ahead of the Lukov March.” The event has been condemned by human rights groups, political parties, and foreign embassies, which criticized the march organizers for promoting racism, xenophobia, and antisemitism. Nationalists gathered in front of the prosecutor’s office to protest the restrictive measures. Meanwhile, dozens of anti-fascist activists staged a rally against the nationalist event, insisting that neo-Nazis should be banned. A heavy police presence blocked any clashes between the two sides. Held annually since 2003, the march over the years has attracted nationalist admirers of Gen. Hristo Lukov, who supported Germany during World War II and was killed by an anti-fascist resistance movement. The general served as war minister from 1935 to 1938 and led the pro-Nazi Germany Union of Bulgarian Legions from 1942 until his death in 1943.

Was, bitte, kann noch schlimmer sein als die Erkenntnis, die jetzt bei Charlotte Knob­loch, der Präsidentin der IKG München, einsickern muss: dass sie nämlich jahrelang von einem Polizei-Leibwächter beschützt wurde, der es insgeheim witzig fand, in Chats zu schreiben, als Fahrziel sei ihm Dachau lieber als Auschwitz, weil man da »früher heimkomme«? Sein Chatpartner, so ist jetzt herausgekommen, erwiderte: »Aber nicht der, der den Ofen sauber machen muss.« Witze unter Bodyguards. Diesem Menschen war Charlotte Knob­lochs Leben anvertraut. Dieser Mensch, der in Chats offenbar mit »HH« für »Heil Hitler« grüßte und über Frau Knobloch auch noch schrieb: »Ich scheiß’ ihr vor die Tür, schön braun, mit Fähnchen«, genoss ihr Vertrauen. ERKENNTNIS Was also ist noch schlimmer als das? Antwort: Noch schlimmer ist die Erkenntnis, dass dem Rechtsstaat dies letztlich egal ist. In München hat das Verwaltungsgericht gerade mit den Achseln gezuckt. Es hat in Richtung von Frau Knob­loch mitgeteilt: Jo, mei. FRANCE’S most famous teenage Resistance fighter who captured 25 Nazis in World War Two has died aged 97. Simone Segouin passed away in the town of Courville-sur-Eure, France, on Tuesday, February 21. She was first acclaimed around the world in August 1944 when Hollywood director George Stevens filmed her with a submachine gun slung over her shoulder. Simone was 18 at the time and had just helped capture 25 German soldiers in her home village of Thivars, about 63 miles southwest of Paris. Days later, she was again hailed a hero after storming into Paris to help liberate the French capital from the Nazis. The woman’s fame was further cemented when she was snapped by legendary war photographer Robert Capa, who published the images in Life magazine the following month.

In their first public comments since they were unmasked, the Lawrences staunchly defended their actions. “The chat was so wholesome,” Katja Lawrence told the Nazi-promoting website Justice Report in an interview published on Monday. “It was mostly homeschooling moms that were lifting each other up when things got difficult.” In reality the content shared in the channel was deeply racist, including a lesson plan to mark the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. last month that described the assassinated civil rights leader as a “deceitful, dishonest, riot-inciting negro.”  The Lawrences blasted the mainstream media for “cherry-picking” the neo-Nazi aspects of their lesson plans, claiming that these were “just fun extras” they added to the regular curriculum they taught their four young children.

‘A master class in antisemitism’: East Bay teacher on leave after complaints of conspiracy theories, bigoted materials – #KickHimOut

A teacher at an East Bay high school remained in his classroom for two months after students complained he taught antisemitic conspiracy theories, with administrators doing nothing to counter the hate speech, according to students and teachers who spoke at a school board meeting last week.  In separate conversations with The Chronicle, members of the school community also alleged English teacher Henry Bens used a Nazi salute in his classroom.  After inquiries from The Chronicle, officials in the Hayward Unified School District issued a statement Wednesday that Bens was on a leave of absence. It was unclear whether he was forced to take the leave or requested it. Officials confirmed they’re investigating “the teacher’s alleged actions” and that Bens would not return to school Monday. The announcement, however, did little to comfort angry teachers and students at Mt. Eden High School, who said they remained concerned about the administrators’ silence and lack of action to ensure young people were given accurate historical information. The incidents were first reported in the Jewish News of Northern California.

Nachdem bei Polizeianwärtern in Sachsen-Anhalt rassistische, antisemitische und gewaltverherrlichende Chats entdeckt worden sind, fordern die Grünen im Landtag Konsequenzen. Ein entsprechender Antrag der Fraktion wurde am Donnerstag in den zuständigen Innenausschuss überwiesen. Unter anderem soll ein Untersuchungsausschuss des Landtags die Vorfälle an der Fachhochschule der Polizei in Aschersleben (Salzlandkreis) klären. „Wir dürfen die Aufarbeitung nicht allein der Exekutive und der Judikative überlassen“, sagte der Parlamentarische Geschäftsführer der Grünen, Sebastian Striegel, in der Landtagsdebatte. Ebenso setze sich die Fraktion in dem Antrag für die Schaffung eines unabhängigen Polizeibeauftragten nach dem Vorbild von Brandenburg ein, das eine solche Stelle jüngst eingerichtet hat. (…) Scharfe Kritik an der Forderung der Grünen nach einem Untersuchungsausschuss kam von Guido Kosmehl, Parlamentarischer Geschäftsführer der FDP-Fraktion. „Was sie machen, ist einen Popanz aufzuführen, weil sie selber nicht an einer Aufklärung interessiert sind“, sagte er in Richtung der Grünen. Der CDU-Abgeordnete Chris Schulenburg, selbst Polizeibeamter, warnte vor einem Generalverdacht gegen die Polizei. Zustimmung erhielt der Grünen-Antrag dagegen von der Linken. „Es ist ein weiterer Beleg dafür, dass wir es mit einem strukturellen Problem zu tun haben und nicht mit Einzelfällen“, hieß es. Die aktuellen Fälle zeigten, dass man Hinweisgeber schützen müsse.
