AI-generated child sex images spawn new nightmare for the web

Investigators say the disturbing images could undermine efforts to find real-world victims. The revolution in artificial intelligence has sparked an explosion of disturbingly lifelike images showing child sexual exploitation, fueling concerns among child-safety investigators that they will undermine efforts to find victims and combat real-world abuse. Generative-AI tools have set off what one analyst called a “predatory arms race” on pedophile forums because they can create within seconds realistic images of children performing sex acts, commonly known as child pornography. Thousands of AI-generated child-sex images have been found on forums across the dark web, a layer of the internet visible only with special browsers, with some participants sharing detailed guides for how other pedophiles can make their own creations. “Children’s images, including the content of known victims, are being repurposed for this really evil output,” said Rebecca Portnoff, the director of data science at Thorn, a nonprofit child-safety group that has seen month-over-month growth of the images’ prevalence since last fall. “Victim identification is already a needle in a haystack problem, where law enforcement is trying to find a child in harm’s way,” she said. “The ease of using these tools is a significant shift, as well as the realism. It just makes everything more of a challenge.” (…) The new AI tools, known as diffusion models, allow anyone to create a convincing image solely by typing in a short description of what they want to see. The models, such as DALL-E, Midjourney and Stable Diffusion, were fed billions of images taken from the internet, many of which showed real children and came from photo sites and personal blogs. They then mimic those visual patterns to create their own images. The tools have been celebrated for their visual inventiveness and have been used to win fine-arts competitions, illustrate children’s books and spin up fake news-style photographs, as well as to create synthetic pornography of nonexistent characters who look like adults. But they also have increased the speed and scale with which pedophiles can create new explicit images because the tools require less technical sophistication than past methods, such as superimposing children’s faces onto adult bodies using “deepfakes,” and can rapidly generate many images from a single command. It’s not always clear from the pedophile forums how the AI-generated images were made. But child-safety experts said many appeared to have relied on open-source tools, such as Stable Diffusion, which can be run in an unrestricted and unpoliced way.

#Twitter Runs Ads for Disney, MSFT, NBA Beside Neo-Nazi Videos – #MuskBusiness

Ads from well-known brands such as Disney, Microsoft and The Telegraph newspaper ran alongside neo-Nazi propaganda this week on Twitter. Family-friendly media conglomerates, tech giants and old newspapers that run ads on social media platforms may try to do so with the assurance that their names will not appear posted alongside racist, hateful imagesbut that is far from guaranteed Elon Musk’s new Twitter. Users tweeted screenshots of the ads alongside clips from an anti-Semitic film, and Gizmodo was able to verify that the ads were still showing with the videos through simple searches. How the snafu began: Verified Twitter users with blue ticks in their bios shared long clips of the anti-Semitic 2017 film Europe: The Final Battlethe Anti-Defamation League considered a “revisionist film about World War II”. It comes from a vile film genre that blames Jews for the cause of war and is sometimes used as a recruitment tool for neo-Nazi groups, according to the ADL. Prior to Musk’s ownership, Twitter attempted to restrict this type of neo-Nazi content, albeit with mixed success. Now the social network offers verified badges to well-known neo-Nazi leaders like Richard Spencer in the name of free speech. When Gizmodo entered variations of the film’s title into the Twitter search bar, we were shown clips from the film, as well as advertisements for online video games, Barron’s newspaper, and the Telegraph. Other Twitter users search for the title saw ads from Disney, Microsoft, the NBA, Freddie Mac, Harper Collins, Adobe, Colonial Penn Life Insurance, and even a legal nonprofit, the Public Rights Project.

Nazi sympathiser built submachine gun and was obsessed with mass killer – #terror

A Nazi thug who built a homemade submachine gun in his garage and kept terrorism manuals after becoming obsessed with the Christchurch mosque killer is facing jail. Ben Styles, 25, was making the deadly weapon at his home in the leafy Warwickshire town of Leamington Spa. He posted in an online group called ‘#Kill All the Jews’ and described the holocaust to friends as the ‘holohoax’, adding: “I hope the holocaust is real next time.” Styles was arrested in April 2021 after police raided his home in Plymouth Place, Leamington Spa, and discovered gun making tools in the garage. He admitted making weapons and ammunition and collecting terrorism material at Birmingham Crown Court. He was acquitted of engaging in conduct in preparation for a terrorist act, contrary to section 5(1) of the Terrorism Act 2006. During his trial, jurors heard Styles acquired various tools including a lathe and a drill press and was making a gun. Police seized the lower part and top part of a homemade submachine gun, as well as shop-bought blanks alongside manuals which showed how to convert blank bullets into live ammunition. Officers also uncovered a Nazi fitness manual and a book titled: “The SS family yearly – celebrations of the SS family.” Styles, who has a B-tec in Engineering, told his friend he was “just getting as strong as possible for the war” and sent a picture of his phone lock screen which had images of swastikas on it, the court heard. The court heard Styles had travelled to New Zealand shortly before the mosque attack in Christchurch in 2019. Messages recovered from Styles when he returned to the UK said: “I just got back from New Zealand – it made me super racist. Then that happened and I had a good day.” His trial heard Styles was fascinated by killer Brenton Tarrant and collected his manifesto and a video he made of the massacre which left 51 people dead and 40 injured. At an earlier hearing, Styles admitted three counts of collecting information contrary to section 58 Terrorism Act 2006 (right wing material and instructional firearms documents) and one count of possessing a prohibited weapon contrary to section 5(1a) Firearms Act 1968.

#Michigan man charged with threatening #synagogue #massacre – #terror

Federal officials say a Michigan man threatened to commit a mass killing at a synagogue on the fifth anniversary of the massacre at two New Zealand mosques by a white supremacist gunman. A 19-year-old Michigan man has been charged with threatening a mass killing at a synagogue on the fifth anniversary of the massacre at two New Zealand mosques by a white supremacist gunman, federal officials say. Seann Patrick Pietila of Pickford, a township in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, was arrested Friday and charged with transmitting a communication containing a threat to injure another, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. Prosecutors say he planned to target the Shaarey Zedek congregation in East Lansing. He allegedly made threats on social media, including Instagram, that included comments about neo-Nazi ideology, antisemitism and glorifying mass shootings, most notably the 2019 shootings in Christchurch, New Zealand, The Detroit News reported. Pietila was arrested the same day a truck driver was convicted of storming a Pittsburgh synagogue in 2018 and fatally shooting 11 congregants in an act of antisemitic terror. The attack at the Tree of Life synagogue was the deadliest attack on Jews in U.S. history and came after the attacker had ranted incessantly on social media about his hatred of Jewish people. (…) When FBI agents arrested Pietila at his home Friday, they found a cache of weapons, knives, tactical equipment, a red-and-white Nazi flag and makeshift plans for killing members of the Shaarey Zedek congregation on March 15, 2024, according to the complaint. The Michigan case focuses on numerous antisemitic social media posts allegedly made by Pietila. Prosecutors say he made apparent references to the New Zealand shooter, who is serving life in prison for killing 51 people and injured 40 others in the 2019 Christchurch mosque attacks.

He was charged with interstate communication of threats. Federal agents discovered the Nazi flag and multiple firearms in the suspect’s Upper Peninsula home. Investigators said his phone contained a note referring to the Shaarey Zedek Congregation synagogue in East Lansing, Michigan and the date March 15, 2024. The date will mark the fifth anniversary of a mass shooting in a Christchurch, New Zealand where a white supremacist murdered 51 Muslims. An equipment list in his phone included pipe bombs and Molotov cocktails.

Midlands supporter of right-wing extremism ‘was making submachine gun’

Ben Styles, of Leamington Spa, was reportedly fascinated by the perpetrator of the New Zealand mosque attack. A supporter of extreme right-wing ideology will be sentenced this month after admitting making weapons and collecting terrorism material, police say. Ben Styles, of Plymouth Place in Leamington Spa, was arrested in April 2021 by detectives from Counter Terrorism Policing. A jury at Birmingham Crown Court heard recently that the 25-year-old had acquired various tools, including a lathe and a drill press, and was reportedly making a gun at the time detectives arrested and searched his home. He was acquitted of engaging in conduct in preparation for a terrorist act at court earlier today (June 15). Prosecutor Matthew Brooks detailed how Styles had travelled to New Zealand shortly before the mosque attack in Christchurch in 2019 but he became fascinated by the attacker, allegedly collecting his manifesto and a video of the massacre according to West Midlands Police. The force added that at an earlier legal hearing in November 2021, Styles admitted three counts of collecting information contrary to section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2006 (right wing material and instructional firearms documents). He also admitted one count of possessing a prohibited weapon. Detective Superintendent Anastasia Miller, from CTP West Midlands CTU, said: “Styles’ was making a submachine gun and ammunition, he also knowingly downloaded and possessed extremely distressing and disturbing imagery.
