#Twitter Runs Ads for Disney, MSFT, NBA Beside Neo-Nazi Videos – #MuskBusiness

Ads from well-known brands such as Disney, Microsoft and The Telegraph newspaper ran alongside neo-Nazi propaganda this week on Twitter. Family-friendly media conglomerates, tech giants and old newspapers that run ads on social media platforms may try to do so with the assurance that their names will not appear posted alongside racist, hateful imagesbut that is far from guaranteed Elon Musk’s new Twitter. Users tweeted screenshots of the ads alongside clips from an anti-Semitic film, and Gizmodo was able to verify that the ads were still showing with the videos through simple searches. How the snafu began: Verified Twitter users with blue ticks in their bios shared long clips of the anti-Semitic 2017 film Europe: The Final Battlethe Anti-Defamation League considered a “revisionist film about World War II”. It comes from a vile film genre that blames Jews for the cause of war and is sometimes used as a recruitment tool for neo-Nazi groups, according to the ADL. Prior to Musk’s ownership, Twitter attempted to restrict this type of neo-Nazi content, albeit with mixed success. Now the social network offers verified badges to well-known neo-Nazi leaders like Richard Spencer in the name of free speech. When Gizmodo entered variations of the film’s title into the Twitter search bar, we were shown clips from the film, as well as advertisements for online video games, Barron’s newspaper, and the Telegraph. Other Twitter users search for the title saw ads from Disney, Microsoft, the NBA, Freddie Mac, Harper Collins, Adobe, Colonial Penn Life Insurance, and even a legal nonprofit, the Public Rights Project.
