The antisemitism animating Putin’s claim to ‘denazify’ Ukraine

The Russian leader’s pretext for invasion recasts Ukraine’s Jewish president as a Nazi and Russian Christians as true victims of the Holocaust. When Vladimir Putin announced Russia’s invasion of Ukraine at dawn on Thursday, he justified the “special military operation” as having the goal to “denazify” Ukraine. The justification is not tenable, but it would be a mistake simply to dismiss it. Vladimir Putin is himself a fascist autocrat, one who imprisons democratic opposition leaders and critics. He is the acknowledged leader of the global far right, which looks increasingly like a global fascist movement. Ukraine does have a far-right movement, and its armed defenders include the Azov battalion, a far-right nationalist militia group. (…) Putin’s claim that Russia is invading Ukraine to denazify it is therefore absurd on its face. But understanding why Putin justifies the invasion of democratic Ukraine in this way sheds important light on what is happening not only in eastern Europe, but worldwide.
Fascism is a cult of the leader, who promises national restoration in the face of supposed humiliation by ethnic or religious minorities, liberals, feminists, immigrants, and homosexuals. The fascist leader claims the nation has been humiliated and its masculinity threatened by these forces. It must regain its former glory (and often its former territory) with violence. He offers himself as the only one who can restore it. (…) Putin, the leader of Russian Christian nationalism, has come to view himself as the global leader of Christian nationalism, and is increasingly regarded as such by Christian nationalists around the world, including in the United States. Putin has emerged as a leader of this movement in part because of the global reach of recent Russian fascist thinkers such as Alexander Dugin and Alexander Prokhanov who laid its groundwork. It is easy to recognize, in Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, the roadmap laid out in recent years by Dugin and Prokhanov, major figures in Putin’s Russia. Both Dugin and Prokhanov viewed an independent Ukraine as an existential threat to their goal, which Timothy Snyder, in his 2018 book The Road to Unfreedom, describes as “a desire for the return of Soviet power in fascist form”. The form of Russian fascism Dugin and Prokhanov defended is like the central versions of European fascism – explicitly antisemitic. As Snyder writes, “… if Prokhanov had a core belief, it was the endless struggle of the empty and abstract sea-people against the hearty and righteous land-people. Like Adolf Hitler, Prokhanov blamed world Jewry for inventing the ideas that enslaved his homeland. He also blamed them for the Holocaust.”

Rassistischer #Angriff in #Möbelhaus: Kunde schlägt Mitarbeiterin – #ikea #kaltland

Ein mutmaßlich rassistisch motivierter Angriff hat in einem Berliner Möbelhaus zu einer Festnahme geführt. Zuvor hatte eine Angestellte einen Kunden beim Betreten des Geschäfts auf die Notwendigkeit des Tragens einer FFP2-Maske hingewiesen. Es kam zu einer Auseinandersetzung, in deren Folge der Kunde die Frau ins Gesicht geschlagen und rassistisch beleidigt haben soll. In einem Möbelhaus in Berlin-Schöneberg ist es am Freitagabend zu einem rassistischen Angriff gekommen. Wie die Polizei am Samstag mitteilte, soll ein 57-Jähriger eine 26-jährige Angestellte ins Gesicht geschlagen und rassistisch beleidigt haben. Vorangegangen war die Aufforderung an den Tatverdächtigen, anstatt einer medizinischen Gesichtsmaske eine FFP2-Maske zu tragen. Als der Kunde diesen Hinweis ignorierte, habe sich die Mitarbeiterin ihm in den Weg gestellt.

(…) Mehrere Zeugen haben laut Polizei berichtet, dass er eine in Syrien geborene Angestellte geschlagen und rassistisch beschimpft habe. Wie die Polizei am Samstag mitteilte, kam der 57-Jährige am Freitagabend gegen 20 Uhr in das Geschäft am Sachsendamm im Ortsteil Schöneberg. Die 26-jährige Angestellte habe ihn im Eingangsbereich angesprochen, weil er statt der vorgeschriebenen FFP2-Maske bloß eine medizinische Gesichtsmaske trug.
“Als der Kunde diesen Hinweis ignorierte, stellte sich ihm die Mitarbeiterin in den Weg”, heißt es in der Mitteilung der Polizei. Daraufhin habe der Mann versucht, die junge Frau zu fotografieren. Das habe sie verhindern wollen, indem sie ihren Arm ausstreckte und vor die Kameralinse hielt. Im nächsten Moment rastete der Mann offenbar aus: Wie mehrere Zeugen aussagten, schlug er der Frau ins Gesicht und schimpfte, dass er sich “von so einem Ausländerpack” nichts sagen lasse. Einem Polizeisprecher zufolge liegen den Beamten die Aussagen von insgesamt drei Zeugen hierzu vor.

Defiant Ukraine President Volodmyr Zelensky on Saturday said his country’s army had successfully repelled Russian forces advancing on Kyiv and was in control of the capital after a night of brutal fighting that saw terrified residents seeking shelter underground. In a video message to the besieged nation, Zelensky accused the Kremlin of attempting to seize Kyiv, overthrow the government and install a ‘puppet’ regime ‘like in Donetsk’, one of two separatist regions which warmonger Vladimir Putin officially recognized before launching an all-out invasion. (…) Zelensky in a Friday night phone call reportedly rejected President Joe Biden’s offer to evacuate him from Kyiv, telling the US leader: ‘The fight is here. I need ammunition, not a ride.’ Late Friday, Biden signed a memo authorizing up to $350 million in additional security assistance to Ukraine, with another $250 possible, bringing the total security aid approved for Ukraine to $1 billion over the past year. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Saturday that the new US aid would provide ‘immediate military assistance to Ukraine to help defend itself from Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified war.’ NATO members Czech Republic and Slovakia said they were sending arms, and Slovakia’s defense minister said up to 1,200 foreign troops from other NATO members could be deployed in his country to reassure member countries on the alliance’s eastern flank.

Democrat President Joe Biden’s administration turned over intelligence to communist China for months about Russia’s plans to invade Ukraine in an attempt to get China to convince Russia to not invade, according to a report. “Over three months, senior Biden administration officials held half a dozen urgent meetings with top Chinese officials in which the Americans presented intelligence showing Russia’s troop buildup around Ukraine and beseeched the Chinese to tell Russia not to invade,” The New York Times reported. “Each time, the Chinese officials, including the foreign minister and the ambassador to the United States, rebuffed the Americans, saying they did not think an invasion was in the works. After one diplomatic exchange in December, U.S. officials got intelligence showing Beijing had shared the information with Moscow, telling the Russians that the United States was trying to sow discord — and that China would not try to impede Russian plans and actions.” The report comes after Russia launched a full-scale invasion into Ukraine late this week and fighting has already reached the country’s capital city of Kyiv, although U.S. officials claim that Russia’s advance has been slowed down some by Ukrainian resistance.

‘It’s not rational’: Putin’s bizarre speech wrecks his once pragmatic image

Analysis: President makes appeal to Ukraine’s military to abandon its ‘drug-addicted, neo-Nazi’ leaders. Looking dead-eyed into the camera on Friday, Vladimir Putin gave one of the most bizarre speeches of his 22 years as Russia’s leader, a directive that managed to sound alarming even in a week when he has ordered tanks into Ukraine and missile strikes on Kyiv. “Once again I speak to the Ukrainian soldiers,” he said, addressing his enemy. “Do not allow neo-Nazis and Banderites to use your children, your wives and the elderly as a human shield. Take power into your own hands. It seems that it will be easier for us to come to an agreement than with this gang of drug addicts and neo-Nazis.” The speech seemed to be ripped from an alternate reality – or from the second world war, where Putin appears to be spending more of his time as he launches the kind of broad military offensive not seen in Europe for nearly 70 years. All this week, Putin’s megalomaniacal tendencies have been on display like never before. He has summoned his aides for a surreal national security council that resembled a television reality show and launched tirades about Lenin and decisions made nearly 100 years ago. He has also, for the first time, spoken about his maximalist goals in this war: regime change in Kyiv, toppling the government of Volodymyr Zelenskiy and replacing it with a more pliant leadership. Putin’s call for a coup in Kyiv indicates that if Russia wins this war, Zelenskiy will almost certainly not remain in power. How he achieves that is anyone’s guess. A number of analysts predicted this as Russia deployed more than 60% of its ground forces to Ukraine’s borders and demanded concessions that could never be granted. But Putin’s unhinged appearances and apparent drive to war have raised questions of whether he remains a rational leader.

Angesichts des russischen Krieges in der Ukraine hat die OECD die Beitrittsverhandlungen mit Russland formell beendet. Die 2007 beschlossenen Aufnahmegespräche lagen allerdings schon seit vielen Jahren auf Eis. Die OECD hatte den russischen Angriff auf die Ukraine zuvor aufs Schärfste verurteilt. Die Organisation für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung hat die auf Eis liegenden Beitrittsverhandlungen Russlands formell beendet. Dies geschehe in Antwort auf den russischen Angriff auf die Ukraine, hieß es in einer Mitteilung vom Freitag. Die OECD hatte die 2007 beschlossenen Aufnahmegespräche bereits 2014 gestoppt. Der OECD-Rat entschied zudem, das Büro der Industriestaatenorganisation in Moskau zu schließen. Man wolle Russland zudem nicht mehr auf Ministerebene einladen. (…) Der OECD-Rat bat den Generalsekretär der Organisation außerdem darum, keine neuen Vereinbarungen über freiwillige Beiträge mit Russland einzugehen und noch nicht begonnene Projekte, die durch eine solche russische Leistung finanziert würden, zu stoppen.

“Identitäre Bewegung” kapert #Corona-Demo in Amberg – #querdenker #covidioten #noIB

Ohne dass sich ein Teilnehmer daran gestört hätte, führten Mitglieder der “Identitären Bewegung” eine Demo gegen die Coronapolitik in Amberg an. Das war nicht das erste Mal, dass Rechtsextreme eine solche Demo für sich vereinnahmten. Ein Handy liegt auf der Straße. Der Bildschirm zeigt den Instagram-Auftritt der “Identitären Bewegung” und ein Foto, das während des Coronaprotestes am 13. Februar in Amberg gemacht wurde. Dort hatten sich die Rechtsextremen mit ihrem Banner zeitweise an der Spitze des Zuges positioniert Als sich am Sonntag, 13. Februar, wieder etliche Menschen in Amberg zusammengefunden hatten, um mit einem Demonstrationszug gegen die Coronapolitik Stimmung zu machen, lief zeitweise eine Gruppe junger Männer an der Spitze der Demo. Vor sich her trugen sie ein Banner mit der Aufschrift “Wir sind immun gegen eure Lügen” in den Farben Rot, Weiß und Schwarz. Die Männer trugen dabei Masken, was in einer einschlägigen Telegram-Gruppe für geteilte Reaktionen sorgte. So schrieb eine Nutzerin “Ich lache mich schlapp. Die sind immun gegen Lügen und tragen Masken. Sorry Leute, aber ich bin gerade vor Lachen vom Stuhl gekippt.” Daraufhin bekam sie den Konter einer anderen Nutzerin, die ihr entgegnete: “Hauptsache, man protestiert und geht auf die Straße. Wie, ist doch egal. Ich fand die jungen Leute super mit dem riesen Banner.”
Rechtsextremisten an Demo-Spitze Tatsächlich liegt die Vermutung nahe, dass es den jungen Männern mit der Maske wohl kaum darum ging, ihre Mitdemonstranten vor einer möglichen Coronainfektion zu schützen. Eine Recherche, deren Aufwand nur wenige Clicks umfasst, zeigt nämlich, welche Akteure hinter der Banner-Aktion stecken und somit an diesem Sonntag zum “Gesicht” der gesamten Demonstration wurden. Die Instagram-Seite und die dazugehörige Telegram-Gruppe “Oberpfalz Revolte” prahlt mit der Aktion und teilt mit, dass es ihre Aktivisten waren, die das Banner trugen. “Wir, die Jugend der Oberpfalz, gehen auf die Straße und fordern ein Ende der verlogenen Coronapolitik”, heißt es weiter in dem Post, den eines der Mitglieder von “Oberpfalz Revolte” auch in die öffentlich zugängliche Telegram-Gruppe der Amberger Gegner der Coronapolitik gestellt hat. Mit einer angefügten Mail-Adresse werben die Aktivisten für neue Mitglieder ihrer Bewegung.
