From #UFOs to #Nazi #flyingsaucers: How #conspiracy theories can foster #hate – #ErnstZundel

A fascination with UFOs is often benign, even positive. But two figures in the development of the culture in Canada show how easily it can be twisted and exploited. he COVID-19 pandemic seems to have brought with it a renewed interest in UFOs in this country. UFO sightings surged early in 2020, and interest in UFO research has recently been further bolstered by the government. (…) Much of UFO culture is immersed in the murky waters of suspicion and paranoia, where an anything-goes ethos encourages engaging with heterodox sources and adjacent stigmatized subjects. It’s not a coincidence that rising engagement with UFO culture in Canada has corresponded with the spread of so-called theories that, according to polling data released last June, now have millions of Canadians thinking conspiratorially (…) Conspiracy theories are, it seems, like potato chips: you can’t have just one. Two of the most prominent figures in the development of UFO culture in Canada illustrate how easily the conspiracism that often accompanies UFO fascination can be exploited: Henry McKay, an Agincourt-based electrician and UFO researcher who also promoted fringe topics such as paranormal and psychic research, fell into the type of conspiratorial thought that more malevolent figures in the community, like the infamous neo-Nazi and Holocaust denier Ernst Zundel, sought to prey on. Zundel’s engagements with UFO culture were grounded in the assumption that people who already believed in one such theory could be susceptible to further radicalization and in the knowledge that figures like McKay were already in conspiratorial headspaces. (…) Enter Christof Friedrich, real name Ernst Zundel, a German émigré who arrived in Canada in 1958. Here, he soon associated himself with the Canadian fascist Adrien Arcand and involved himself in hateful organizing under the guise of German Canadian advocacy (…) In 1974, he published an English translation of the Holocaust-denial essay The Auschwitz Lie, kicking off an ignominious and multi-decade career as one of the world’s biggest traffickers of hate. Zundel was well aware that individuals with fringe interests could be manipulated into absorbing radicalizing fictions. Zundel quickly found that he wasn’t able to place advertisements for his Holocaust denial in periodicals. What they would accept, however, were ads for UFO literature. Writing under a pseudonym, Zundel in 1974 released UFOs: Nazi Secret Weapons?, which told of Adolf Hitler’s escape from Berlin to subterranean bases in Antarctica by way of South America in a Nazi-developed flying saucer. The book was an abridged translation of a German text that Zundel augmented with esoteric ideas — taken from the Thule Society — about a hollow inner Earth accessible through Antarctica, Nazi-collaborating extraterrestrials, and distorted versions of actual military operations like Operation High Jump.

In memoir, Prince Harry said to claim infamous Nazi costume was William’s idea

Report says that Harry being widely chastised while his brother suffered no consequences marked a turning point in the young royal’s relationship with his family. Prince Harry writes in a new memoir that his brother William and Kate Middleton were behind his infamous decision to dress up as a Nazi when he was 20, the Page Six tabloid reported Thursday. The revelation is one of many from the ghostwritten memoir, titled “Spare,” which includes revelations about the estranged royal’s drug-taking, first sexual encounter and role in killing people during his military service in Afghanistan. The book is set to be published on Tuesday. According to Page Six, William and Kate “howled” with laughter when they saw him dressed up for the 2005 party. In one segment of the book, obtained by Page Six, Harry wrote about choosing the outfit, revealing that he deliberated between two costumes: a pilot or a Nazi. “I phoned Willy and Kate, asked what they thought. Nazi uniform, they said,” Harry wrote, adding that when he went home and tried it on for them, “They both howled. Worse than Willy’s leotard outfit! Way more ridiculous! Which, again, was the point.”

Vandals desecrate Holocaust memorial in Thessaloniki for the 4th time

Swastika, white supremacist Celtic cross daubed on monument in Greek city that was home to the largest Sephardic community in Europe before the Nazi genocide. For at least the fourth time since it was installed in 2014, vandals desecrated a Holocaust memorial in Thessaloniki, a Greek city whose population once had a Jewish plurality. A photo appearing Thursday on the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece website showed a red swastika daubed on a grave that symbolizes the tombstones destroyed by the Nazis after they deported more than 90% of Thessaloniki’s population to death camps. Additionally, a red Celtic Cross, a white supremacist symbol, defiled one of five historical markers lining the site at Aristotle University, on ground where the cemetery once was. “We condemn the unholy act of the vandals, followers of intolerance and antisemitism that express their hatred and fanaticism through the profanation of the memory of the Salonican Jews,” the site quoted the city’s Jewish community as saying in a statement. “No tolerance to antisemitism!”

HEIL HAIDER Rassischsozialistische Arische Widerstandsbewegung (R.A.W.)”.

Austria city to rename Porsche street over founder’s Nazi past

The Austrian city of Linz says it plans to rename a street honoring the founder of the luxury carmaker Porsche after a commission probing controversial names found his Nazi past “problematic.” The renaming of streets and other public places is still a hotly debated issue in Austria — Adolf Hitler’s birthplace — which Nazi Germany annexed in 1938 and which long cast itself as a victim. Only in the past three decades has the country begun to seriously examine its role in the Holocaust, which saw the murder of about a third of Austria’s Jewish population of 200,000. The Porscheweg and three other streets are to be renamed in Linz, just under 200 kilometers (120 miles) west of Vienna, a city spokeswoman tells AFP.
