In Zeitz wurden sämtliche Stolpersteine gestohlen. Für Hinweise wurde eine Belohnung von 1.000 Euro ausgesetzt. Neue Stolpersteine sollen durch Spenden finanziert werden. In Zeitz im Burgenlandkreis haben Unbekannte seit Freitag insgesamt zehn Stolpersteine gestohlen. Das hat die Polizei MDR SACHSEN-ANHALT mitgeteilt. Der Staatsschutz habe Ermittlungen aufgenommen, da ein antisemitischer Hintergrund nicht ausgeschlossen werden könne. Mit den Stolpersteinen wird an das Schicksal der Menschen erinnert, die während der NS-Zeit verfolgt, vertrieben oder in Konzentrationslagern ermordet wurden. Die im Boden verlegten Messingplatten tragen die Namen der NS-Opfer und sind auf den Gehwegen vor ihren letzten Wohnhäusern eingelassen. Laut dem Landtagsabgeordneten für Zeitz, Sebastian Striegel (Grüne), zeigt die Tat, dass in der Gesellschaft Antisemitismus grassiert. Striegel erklärte, er setze in Absprache mit dem Zeitzer Bündnis für Vielfalt und Demokratie sowie der Initiative Stolpersteine für Zeitz eine Belohnung von insgesamt 1.000 Euro für Hinweise aus, die zur Ergreifung der Täter sowie zur Rückgabe des Diebesguts führen.Die Linken-Fraktionsvorsitzende Eva von Angern bezeichnete den Diebstahl als “abscheulich”. Besonders perfide ist Angern zufolge, dass die Tat zeitlich mit dem Jahrestag des Hamas-Überfalls auf Israel zusammenfiel.

A Romani survivor of Nazi terror: ‘Young people, babies, infants, were beaten to death’

Christian Pfeil says ‘it’s important to remind society again and again that this actually happened’, especially at a time when right-wing extremism is growing across Europe. Holocaust survivor Christian Pfeil (80) came to Dublin this week. He was born in Lublin in Poland in January 1944. His family are Sinti, a Romani people. The entire family were deported from Trier in Germany to camps in German-occupied Poland in 1940. He spoke at Never Again: Recognition, Remembrance and Reflection on the Roma Genocide, an event held by Pavee Point Traveller and Roma Centre at the Mansion House on Wednesday. At least 500,000 Roma and Sinti people were killed by the Nazi regime (many historians consider this an underestimate) but they were not represented at the Nuremburg trials and Germany only officially recognised this genocide in 1982. It is often referred to as “the forgotten genocide”. Some Roma people call it “the Porajmos”, which means “the devouring”. (…) Anti-Roma and anti-Sinti persecution persisted after the war. It was a fact of life for Pfeil throughout his life, he says. To make matters worse, the trauma his family experienced wasn’t recognised. “Whenever someone talked about the Holocaust, it was always about Jewish victims, never about the experiences of Roma and Sinti, which made me quite angry. I knew how many people died, how many people were killed in the gas chambers. I knew the facts. I saw a lot of anti-Sinti, anti-Roma, prejudice and racism in Germany when I was growing up. And obviously those things are linked to what happened. German society wanted as fast as possible to both forget and to deny the Nazi period … And they, of course, didn’t want to hear about the Sinti and Roma during the Holocaust. Even though I am pretty sure that they know.”

Was folgte, war schlichte Desinformation über die industrielle Massenvernichtung der Jüdinnen und Juden. Dass Millionen Menschen in deutschen Lagern „ums Leben gekommen“ seien, habe nur an Überforderung und Planlosigkeit gelegen, so Cooper: Die Nazis hätten schlicht nicht die Ressourcen gehabt, sich um sie zu kümmern. Weiter im Gespräch, das über zwei Stunden dauerte, sagte er, dass Churchill und nicht Hitler der eigentliche Oberbösewicht des Zweiten Weltkriegs gewesen sei. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN EASIER TO SIMPLY NOT POST HOLOCAUST DENIALISM IN THE FIRST PLACE. Elon Musk seems to have had second thoughts about platforming far-right nonsense on his own account. The flailing executive deleted a quote-tweet in which he called a Tucker Carlson podcast featuring a Nazi apologist “very interesting” and “worth watching” after near-universal backlash. In the original Carlson post, which is still live, the ex-Fox pundit interviews purported historian Darryl Cooper, an apparent Holocaust denier who says, among other things, that then-UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill was the “chief villain” of World War II. As with other forms of Holocaust denial, Cooper’s points were less pro-Adolf Hitler and instead tended more on the side of erasure, as evidenced by his claim that “millions of people ended up dead” in Nazi concentration camps — without naming either the Jewish victims of those atrocities or their genocidal perpetrators. Quote-tweeted on the heels of his promotion of an overtly sexist take about women’s brains and leadership, Musk’s since-deleted insistence that the junk historian’s takes are “interesting” was met with revulsion. As one Lithuanian noted, the post would likely be considered illegal in the Eastern European country because rather than finding “Holocaust denial ‘very interesting’, we find it a massive threat to our safety.” “That finding comes from horrific real life experience,” the user continued, “not from the whisperings of ketamine fairies.” In Denial As Mother Jones’ DC bureau chief David Corn noted, the Holocaust denial evidenced in Carlson’s interview with Cooper goes way back, too. “Imagine someone saying drag performers at the Olympics was worse than Hitler’s conquest of Paris. Well, you don’t have to,” he wrote, screenshotting another Cooper post. “And Tucker Carlson and Elon Musk enthusiastically amplify this guy.”
