Die 20-Jährige habe sich aber geweigert, sich durch die Sanitäterin behandeln zu lassen, und habe diese außerdem rassistisch beleidigt.

Hitler wiederum sei es nicht nur um den Eintritt in eine Landesregierung gegangen, „sondern darum, zu demonstrieren, wie man eine Exekutive von innen her erobern könne“. Vom Berliner NSDAP-Gauleiter Joseph Goebbels ist der Satz überliefert: „Da werden wir die erste Probe aufs Exempel liefern.“ Und so soll sich Geschichte wiederholen? In Thüringen, einer der wichtigsten Hochburgen der AfD mit dem rechtsextremen Björn Höcke an der Spitze, wo im September ein neuer Landtag gewählt wird?

Elon Musk and the danger to democracy

What, if anything, can democracies do to address the danger posed by online disinformation. It is hard to know where to start with Elon Musk. Long before he bought Twitter and renamed it X, he was spreading incendiary disinformation. This included a bizarre witch hunt against the British diver who helped rescue 12 boys and their soccer coach from a Thai cave. With no basis, Musk accused the man of being a “pedo guy” after he cast doubt on the submersible rescue vessel Musk had delivered. Musk has since deleted that tweet and others like it. But he keeps adding new posts to his burgeoning library of almost 49,000. In the last few days, he has commented repeatedly on the racist riots in Britain. He has forecast a coming UK civil war, condemned Britain’s prime minister Sir Keir Starmer for alleged bias towards non-whites and implied that Britain’s immigration policies were responsible for the murder of three girls last week in Southport. Posts by figures who were banned under Twitter’s previous ownership, such as Tommy Robinson, a fringe and four-times-jailed extreme right British activist, have gone viral. On Thursday, Musk promoted another far right British figure — Ashlea Simon, co-founder of Britain First, also a white supremacist splinter group — who claimed Starmer planned to send British rioters to detention camps in the Falkland Islands. Simon’s post cited a fake Daily Telegraph story carrying that headline, a story the Telegraph quickly pointed out was invented. Musk deleted his tweet but only after it had made about 2mn impressions and with no apology for his error. That Musk would get duped by lies circulating on the site is mildly ironic; he has revealed his gullibility many times. That he would frequently and almost exclusively endorse fringe far-right activists is a cause for genuine concern. Musk claims to be a champion of free speech. With nearly 195mn followers, he is America’s most influential purveyor of disinformation. In total he has made 50 posts since January 1 that have been debunked by independent fact checkers, according to the Center for Countering Digital Hate. These were viewed 1.2bn times. They included a deep fake video that purportedly showed Kamala Harris calling herself “the ultimate diversity hire”. A long essay could be devoted to the litany of nefarious characters Musk has incited and on which subjects. Suffice to say his political statements are generally about voting fraud, illegal immigration, race or gender. But this is a newsletter so I will spare Swampian stomachs.

Trump campaign says its internal messages hacked by Iran

Donald Trump’s campaign has said some of its internal communications have been hacked and suggested it was targeted by Iranian operatives. US news website Politico reported on Saturday that it had been emailed campaign documents including internal research carried out on Trump’s running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance. “These documents were obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States, intended to interfere with the 2024 election,” a campaign spokesman told the BBC. Politico said it had confirmed the authenticity of the documents. The BBC has not independently verified the claims. The campaign did not give any further details or any evidence linking the document leak to Iranian hackers or the Iranian government. Its statement came one day after Microsoft released a report indicating that Iranian hackers targeted the campaign of an unnamed US presidential candidate in June. Microsoft’s Threat Analysis Center (MTAC) said that the campaign was sent a spear phishing email – a message designed to look trustworthy in order to get the target to click on a malicious link.

Meta beats censorship lawsuit by RFK Jr’s anti-vaccine group

Meta Platforms (META.O), opens new tab defeated an appeal by Children’s Health Defense, an anti-vaccine group founded by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., challenging its censorship of Facebook posts that spread misinformation about vaccines’ efficacy and safety. In a decision on Friday, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Pasadena, California, said the nonprofit did not show that Meta worked with or was coerced by federal officials to suppress views challenging “government orthodoxy” on vaccines. Children’s Health Defense sued in 2020, saying that Meta had violated its constitutional rights by flagging “vaccine misinformation” as false, and taking away its right to advertise on Facebook. Meta’s actions included prohibiting users from sharing claims that COVID-19 vaccines don’t work, and referring viewers of Children’s Health Defense posts to the World Health Organization for facts about COVID-19. Circuit Judge Eric Miller, appointed to the court by Republican former President Donald Trump, wrote for the appeals court that Meta was a “purely private” company with a First Amendment right not to use its platform to promote views it found distasteful. “Meta evidently believes that vaccines are safe and effective and that their use should be encouraged,” Miller wrote. “It does not lose the right to promote those views simply because they happen to be shared by the government.” The court also rejected Children’s Health Defense’s claims against the Poynter Institute and Science Feedback, which help Meta evaluate the accuracy of Facebook content. Kennedy, an independent U.S. presidential candidate, helped argue Children’s Health Defense’s appeal. Meta removed, opens new tab the group’s accounts from Facebook and Instagram in August 2022.

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, at centre of Olympics gender row, files legal complaint over online harassment

Khelif was crowned an Olympic champion on Friday after comfortably beating China’s Yang Liu by unanimous decision to win gold in the women’s welterweight final. The Algerian boxer at the centre of a gender row at the Paris Olympics has filed a legal complaint saying she has been a victim of online harassment. Imane Khelif’s lawyer Nabil Boudi said the complaint was filed with the Paris Prosecutor’s Office on Friday. On Saturday, the gold-winning boxer said: “All that is being said about me on social media is immoral. I want to change the minds of people around the world.” Khelif was crowned an Olympic champion on Friday after comfortably beating China’s Yang Liu by unanimous decision to win gold in the women’s welterweight final. She won each of the three rounds on the judges’ scorecards and jumped into the arms of her trainer when the decision was announced. He carried the 25-year-old around the arena on his shoulders in celebration. “For eight years, this has been my dream, and I’m now the Olympic champion and gold medalist,” Khelif said through an interpreter. Asked about the row, she told reporters: “That also gives my success a special taste because of those attacks.”

Rassismusvorwürfe gegen Richter : Anzeige wegen Volksverhetzung

Der Geraer Richter Bengt Fuchs soll sich im Netz rassistisch und homofeindlich geäußert haben. Nun könnte eine Verjährung der Vorwürfe drohen. Die Zeit läuft ab. Ab dem 7. August könnten die ressentimentgeladenen digitalen Äußerungen des Richters Bengt Fuchs ohne juristische Konsequenzen bleiben. Vor fast genau fünf Jahren soll der Richter am Verwaltungsgericht Gera in dem korporierten Forum „Tradition mit Zukunft“ (TraMiZu) unter anderem vorgeschlagen haben, Sinti und Roma als „Rotationseuropäer mit Eigentumszuordnungsschwäche“ zu bezeichnen. Nun hat die Linken-Politikerin Katharina König-Preuss bei der Staatsanwaltschaft Gera Anzeige gegen Fuchs wegen „Volksverhetzung“ gestellt, um einer Verjährung entgegenzuwirken. „Ich bitte dringend darum auf etwaige verjährungsunterbrechende Maßnahmen hinzuwirken“, schreibt die Thüringer Landtagsabgeordnete. Über rassistische Kommentare und homophobe Postings eines „Bengt Fuchs“ oder „BeFuchs287“ hatten vor sechs Wochen zuerst die taz, Legal Tribune Online und der MDR berichtet. Fuchs räumte gegenüber der taz ein, Alter Herr der Turnerschaft Salia Jenensis Göttingen zu sein. (…) Die Staatsanwaltschaft Gera hat derweil Ermittlungen gegen „Unbekannt“ wegen des „Anfangsverdacht der Volksverhetzung“ aufgenommen, wie die Behörde auf taz-Anfrage bestätigt. Dem MDR versicherte die Staatsanwaltschaft, dem Eintritt einer Verjährung entgegenzuwirken. Diesen Effekt hätte etwa die Durchführung einer Vernehmung oder die Beauftragung eines oder einer Sachverständigen. Suspendierung gefordert König-Preuss wollte mit ihrer Anzeige den Handlungsdruck erhöhen. Denn die mutmaßlichen Äußerungen des Richters bestätigen den Verdacht, dass er nicht unparteiisch und fair entscheide. Die Vorwürfe hätten längst zu einem weiteren Vertrauensverlust gegenüber der Justiz geführt und ließen deutliche Zweifel an der Eignung für die richterliche Tätigkeit erkennen, so König-Preuss. Sie fordert Fuchs’ Suspendierung und dass das Justizministerium endlich handele.
