Trump campaign says its internal messages hacked by Iran

Donald Trump’s campaign has said some of its internal communications have been hacked and suggested it was targeted by Iranian operatives. US news website Politico reported on Saturday that it had been emailed campaign documents including internal research carried out on Trump’s running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance. “These documents were obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States, intended to interfere with the 2024 election,” a campaign spokesman told the BBC. Politico said it had confirmed the authenticity of the documents. The BBC has not independently verified the claims. The campaign did not give any further details or any evidence linking the document leak to Iranian hackers or the Iranian government. Its statement came one day after Microsoft released a report indicating that Iranian hackers targeted the campaign of an unnamed US presidential candidate in June. Microsoft’s Threat Analysis Center (MTAC) said that the campaign was sent a spear phishing email – a message designed to look trustworthy in order to get the target to click on a malicious link.

The Trump campaign announced it had been hacked by “foreign sources” that leaked internal documents to news organizations. Iran is the prime suspect. The Trump campaign accused Iran of a hack-and-leak operation Saturday, after a 270-page dossier of JD Vance’s “vulnerabilities” was sent to at least two news organizations. The internal campaign vetting report on Vance was sent to Politico and The Washington Post from an AOL.com email address, along with a document on Marco Rubio, the Florida senator who was not chosen as Donald Trump’s running mate. Hours after Politico revealed it received the materials, the Trump campaign said it had been hacked, accusing Iran of the breach. (…) One email contained a 271-page report on Vance entitled “POTENTIAL VULNERABILITIES.” Robert told Politico they had a “variety of documents from [Trump’s] legal and court documents to internal campaign discussions,” and when pressed for how they obtained them, Robert responded, “I suggest you don’t be curious about where I got them from. Any answer to this question, will compromise me and also legally restricts you from publishing them.” This is by no means a first for Trump. Former President Donald Trump’s campaign said Saturday that some internal documents and communications had been hacked and blamed it on “foreign sources hostile to the United States” intent on interfering with the presidential election. The acknowledgment by the campaign came after the POLITICO news organization reported that it had received emails from an anonymous account with documents that purported to be from inside the Trump campaign operation. “These documents were obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States, intended to interfere with the 2024 election and sow chaos throughout our Democratic process,” campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement to USA TODAY.
