Thousands of anti-racism protesters gathered across England and formed human shields to protect asylum centres after police warned of unrest from more than 100 far right-led rallies. Holding placards saying “refugees welcome” and “reject racism, try therapy”, people took to the streets in towns and cities nine days after the country was shaken by repeated riots following the murders of three girls in Merseyside. But there was little sign of the unrest seen over the past week. Police staged their biggest mobilisation to counter disorder since the 2011 riots on Wednesday as they said there was a credible threat that many of the planned gatherings could turn violent. (…) About 6,000 riot-trained officers were drafted in to tackle the expected rallies and an estimated 30 counter-protests after immigration law firms and refugee centres were listed as potential targets in a far-right chat group on the encrypted messaging app Telegram. But thousands of counter-protesters took to the streets of Liverpool, Birmingham, Bristol, Brighton and London to protect their communities from the rumoured protests that were due to take place on Wednesday evening. At 7pm in Liverpool, hundreds of people formed a human shield outside a targeted church that hosts an immigration advice centre while women held banners saying: “Nans against Nazis”. Similar scenes were witnessed in the east London boroughs of Hackney and Walthamstow as thousands of local people and anti-fascist activists came together and held placards saying “we are one human race” and “unite against hate”. In Brighton, the handful of anti-immigration protesters who gathered outside a targeted law office were surrounded by police for their own protection after they were outnumbered by about 500 counter-protesters who chanted: “Off our streets, Nazi scum.” Later, the gathering took on a street carnival atmosphere with a samba band and loud singing.

Der geplante Bau einer S-Bahn-Linie unter dem Sinti- und Roma-Denkmal in Berlin sorgt weiter für Ärger. 50 Einwendungen sind bei der Bahn eingegangen. Fast könnte man den Ort übersehen. Im Schatten des Reichstagsgebäudes in Berlin steht das Mahnmal für die ermordeten Sinti und Roma Europas, in einer äußeren Nische des Tiergartens. Nur eine Handvoll Touristen hat am Donnerstagmittag hier die tägliche Zeremonie mitbekommen: Auf die dreieckige Stele, die in der Mitte eines Wasserbeckens steht, wurde eine frische Wildblume gelegt. Künstler Dani Karavan, der das Mahnmal schuf, wollte diesen Akt als Symbol des „Lebens, der Trauer und der Erinnerung“ verstanden wissen. Betroffeneninitiativen sehen heute diese Erinnerung an dem Mahnmal in Gefahr, weil die Deutsche Bahn hier einen neuen S-Bahn-Tunnel plant. „Zuversichtlich bin ich nicht“, sagt Romeo Franz telefonisch aus Oświęcim in Polen. Der 57-jährige Generalsekretär der Bundesvereinigung Sinti und Roma hat sechs Angehörige in der NS-Zeit verloren, sein Großonkel wurde in Auschwitz, wie die Stadt in der NS-Zeit hieß, erschossen. Dort, im ehemaligen deutschen Vernichtungslager Auschwitz-Birkenau, findet am Freitag eine Gedenkveranstaltung zum Jahrestag des Völkermords an den Sinti und Roma statt, zu der er angereist ist. Franz kämpft für die Zukunft des Roma-Mahnmals im Berliner Tiergarten, das nach langen Diskussionen vor zehn Jahren eröffnet wurde und nun schon wieder in Gefahr ist. „Die Bedeutung und die Einzigartigkeit des Mahnmals stehen nicht im Vordergrund“, sagt Franz, „das ist sehr traurig.“ Seit Jahren gibt es Streit um den Gedenkort. Die Deutsche Bahn will eine neue Nord-Süd-Verbindung für die S-Bahn bauen, die unterirdisch den Hauptbahnhof mit dem Süden der Stadt verbinden und das Regierungsviertel unterqueren soll. Ein Stück der Trasse soll direkt unter dem Mahnmal verlaufen. In einem offenen Brief, den zuletzt 240 Menschen unterzeichnet hatten, kritisieren Roma-Angehörige und Kulturschaffende, dass der Tunnel nur einen Meter unter der Erinnerungsstätte verlaufen soll. Sie fürchten, dass es durch den künftigen S-Bahn-Verkehr zu Erschütterungen an dem Mahnmal kommen könnte. Außerdem beanstanden sie, dass mehrere Bäume, die das Mahnmal kreisförmig umgeben und zu dem stillen Gedenken an dem Ort beitragen sollen, für das Bauvorhaben gefällt werden müssten. (…) Doch nicht alle teilen diese Zuversicht. Zu den Kritikern gehören unter anderem die Lagergemeinschaft Dachau, der Bundesverband der Roma und die Bundesvereinigung der Sinti und Roma. Die größte Vereinigung von Betroffenen in Deutschland, der Zentralrat der Sinti und Roma, hält sich dagegen mit Kritik an dem Bauvorhaben zurück. „Wenn die in Auftrag gegebenen Gutachten feststellen, dass durch die Baumaßnahmen keine Schäden am Denkmal entstehen, dann werden wir mit der Bahn und dem Berliner Senat ein abschließendes Gespräch über dieses wichtige Infrastrukturprojekt führen“, erklärte ihr Vorsitzender Romani Rose gegenüber der taz. „Der Zentralrat lehnt eine reine Blockadehaltung ab.“ Die deutschen Sinti und Roma seien Teil der Gesellschaft und des Landes und wendeten sich nicht gegen ein Infrastrukturprojekt, das für die Berlinerinnen und Berliner eine Notwendigkeit sei, so Rose. Die Roma-Selbstorganisation Romatrial, die den offenen Brief aufgesetzt hatte, sieht in dem Bauvorhaben dagegen „ein politisch skandalöses Versagen der politischen Gedenkkultur in Deutschland“. Unterzeichnet haben den Protestbrief unter anderem der Direktor der Stiftung Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas, Uwe Neumärker, der ehemalige französische Kulturminister Jack Lang und der Filmregisseur Wim Wenders. „Niemand käme auch nur auf die Idee, das Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas anzurühren“, heißt es in dem Schreiben. „Ganz offenbar wird der Gedenkstätte der Sinti und Roma weniger Respekt entgegengebracht.“

Vance Blasted Over Photo Of Him Next To Swastika At Gun Show

Before he was the 2024 Republican vice presidential nominee or the junior U.S. senator from Ohio, JD Vance was photographed at a gun show on the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks just feet away from framed Nazi memorabilia. In the photo, which Vance tweeted on September 11, 2021 without comment, the Hillbilly Elegy author is seen holding his infant child while looking at a table displaying several revolvers of various calibers. One vendor at a nearby table is seen sitting next to framed Nazi memorabilia, including a flag bearing a swastika, and two different Nazi war ensigns known as “Reichskriegsflagge” and a variety of Nazi war medals. One of the guns on the table Vance is standing over is a Luger pistol commonly used by Nazi soldiers during World War II. Journalist Carlos Berrios Polanco, who publishes the Heavy Weather newsletter, noticed the photo of Vance on Friday night and tweeted: “They really did not do any social media vetting or clean up on this guy at all. Kind of hilarious if it wasn’t so bleak.” (…) Vance has been embroiled in a tsunami of negative news coverage ever since he was officially selected as former President Donald Trump’s 2024 running mate. He spent Friday trying to explain comments he made in 2021 lamenting to former Fox News host Tucker Carlson that the government was being overtaken by “childless cat ladies.” The Ohio senator has also been the subject of memes mocking him over a debunked rumor that he committed a sex act with a couch.

Neo-Nazis Using Generative AI On TikTok To Reach 10s Of Millions

An independent human rights organization says TikTok is hosting and promoting neo-Nazi accounts that are denying the holocaust, glorifying Hitler, supporting white supremacist mass shooters and more. They’re also using generative AI, coded words and audio, and manipulated or obfuscated images to evade filters. “TikTok hosts hundreds of accounts which openly support Nazism and use the video app to promote their ideology and propaganda,” the Institute for Strategic Dialog report says. “This includes videos featuring Holocaust denial; glorification of Hitler, Nazi-era Germany, and Nazism as a solution to contemporary issues; support for white supremacist mass shooters, and livestreamed footage or recreations of these massacres. ISD says they found a network of “hundreds” of accounts after initially seeing just one neo-Nazi. And, similarly to how YouTube has been shown to be used by racists to amplify their messages, TikTok’s algorithm works to give people more of what they seem to like. That’s a self-reinforcing loop which leads to more and more of the same kind of content, and when it comes to hate speech or misinformation, the algorithm works exactly the same way on TikTok’s “For You Page.” “After viewing the pages of 10 accounts in the network and 10 videos total, a new dummy account scrolled through just three videos in TikTok’s For You Page (FYP) before receiving a recommendation for Nazi propaganda,” the ISD report says. “For a longer-standing dummy account which has engaged with more such content, most videos in TikTok’s FYP promote Nazism or hate speech.”When reported, TikTok is not taking the videos down, or at least not taking them down promptly, ISD says, despite TikTok’s community guidelines around hateful ideologies, promotion of violence, Holocaust denial, and more.

Content warning: This report includes examples of racist extremist content.  Summary TikTok hosts hundreds of accounts which openly support Nazism and use the video app to promote their ideology and propaganda, as identified in the analysis laid out in this report. Our research began after finding one such account, which was expanded into a wider network of 200 accounts by examining the pro-Nazi accounts it followed and some of the accounts those accounts followed, as well as searching for violative content and using TikTok’s algorithm. Accounts were included in this study if they produced several videos expressly promoting Nazism or if they featured Nazi symbols in their usernames, profile pictures, etc. Key findings include: Pro-Nazi content is receiving tens of millions of views on TikTok. This includes videos featuring Holocaust denial; glorification of Hitler, Nazi-era Germany, and Nazism as a solution to contemporary issues; support for white supremacist mass shooters, and livestreamed footage or recreations of these massacres. Self-identified Nazis discuss TikTok as an amenable platform to spread their ideology which can be used to reach ‘much more people’, even if accounts are brand new or have a low following. TikTok is failing to take down violative videos and accounts, even when the content is reported by users. ISD reported 50 accounts in the network that violated TikTok’s community guidelines around hateful ideologies, promotion of violence, Holocaust denial, and other rules. The accounts, which collectively received over 6.2 million views, included those that either promoted Nazism in their videos or featured hate speech so long as they also included Nazi symbols in their profile pictures, usernames, nicknames or descriptions. After one day, all 50 accounts remained active, with all reports returning “no violation”. Accounts and videos promoting Nazism are algorithmically amplified, with TikTok quickly recommending such content to users engaging with similar far-right hate speech. After viewing the pages of 10 accounts in the network and 10 videos total, a new dummy account scrolled through just three videos in TikTok’s For You Page (FYP) before receiving a recommendation for Nazi propaganda. For a longer-standing dummy account which has engaged with more such content, most videos in TikTok’s FYP promote Nazism or hate speech. These videos often feature AI-generated media. This content frequently denigrates minorities and promotes Nazism, including, for example, an AI-generated translation of a speech from Hitler which continues to go viral. Such content helps modernize Nazi propaganda, reach a broader international audience and can be used to skirt platform moderation; TikTok Has a Nazi Problem Not only is TikTok’s algorithm promoting Neo-Nazi content, extremist organizations are also using the platform to recruit new members and encourage real-world action. Neo-Nazis and white supremacists are sharing Hitler-related propaganda and trying to recruit new members on TikTok, according to a new report from the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) shared exclusively with WIRED. The TikTok algorithm is also promoting this content to new users, researchers found, as extremist communities are leveraging the huge popularity of TikTok among younger audiences to spread their message. The report from ISD details how hundreds of extremist TikTok accounts are openly posting videos promoting Holocaust denial and the glorification of Hitler and Nazi-era Germany, and suggesting that Nazi ideology is a solution to modern-day issues such as the alleged migrant invasion of Western countries. The accounts also show support for white supremacist mass shooters and livestream-related footage or recreations of these massacres. Many of the accounts use Nazi symbols in their profile pictures or include white supremacist codes in their usernames.

Unter dem Mahnmal des Porajmos in Berlin ist ein S-Bahn-Tunnel geplant. Hinterbliebene fürchten um das Gedenken. Doch Senat und Bahn wiegeln ab. Die Organisation Romatrial bezeichnet die Vorgänge, mit denen sie aktuell im Berliner Tiergarten konfrontiert ist, als ein „skandalöses Versagen“ der Gedenkkultur in Deutschland. In einem offenen Brief protestiert die Selbstorganisation von Roma und Sinti gegen den Bau eines S-Bahn-Tunnels, der ihrer Auffassung nach ein dortiges Mahnmal „massiv beschädigen“ würde. „Die Pläne offenbaren einen noch verheerenderen Eingriff in das Denkmal der ermordeten Sinti und Roma Europas als zuvor angenommen“, heißt es in dem Schreiben, das am Mittwoch fast 160 Menschen unterzeichnet hatten. Die Deutsche Bahn und die Berliner Senatsverwaltung für Verkehr bekräftigen angesichts der Vorwürfe, alles dafür tun zu wollen, die Einschränkungen durch den Bau so gering wie möglich zu halten, wollen aber an dem Vorhaben festhalten. Mit ihrem offenen Brief protestiert die Organisation Romatrial gegen das Planfeststellungsverfahren und die Baupläne im Tiergarten. „Wir fordern eine alternative Trassenführung für den Bau der S21, die den Gedenkort unbeschadet lässt“, heißt es. Störung des Gedenkens Die Unterzeichnenden kritisieren, dass der geplante S-Bahn-Tunnel nur einen Meter unter dem Denkmal entlangführe. Damit würden Erschütterungen durch durchfahrende S-Bahnen spürbar, dies würde das stille Gedenken an dem Ort massiv stören. Zudem würde das Gesamtensemble des Mahnmals „irreversibel beschädigt“, weil wegen des geplanten Tunnels die umliegenden Bäume gefällt werden müssten und die neuen Pflanzen wegen der Unterhöhlung nicht dieselbe Höhe erreichen würden.

Croatia declares 3 Montenegrin officials persona non grata over WWII camp genocide statement

Croatia has declared three senior Montenegrin government officials persona non grata after they led a declaration in Montenegro’s parliament stating that genocide was committed in a World War II concentration camp operated by a pro-Nazi Croatian regime at the time (…) Croatia’s Foreign Ministry informed neighboring Montenegro in a diplomatic note that the country’s parliament speaker, Andrija Mandic, lawmaker Milan Knezevic and Vice Premier Aleksa Becic are now unwelcome in the European Union nation. Montenegro’s parliament recently passed a declaration on “genocide” in the Jasenovac prison camp in Croatia, where tens of thousands of ethnic Serbs, Jews and anti-Nazi Croats perished during the war. Zagreb said the passing of the resolution was “unacceptable, inappropriate and unnecessary” with the intention “not to build a culture of remembrance” but to exploit the “memory of the victims of Jasenovac for short-term political goals.” Croatia was run by a pro-Nazi puppet regime during WWII. After the war, Croatia became part of a Communist-run Yugoslavia together with several other Balkan nations, including Montenegro. Yugoslavia broke up in a war in the 1990s.

Buchenwald-Gedenkstättenleiter Jens-Christian Wagner sieht bei der Thüringer AfD immer offenere Bezüge zum Nationalsozialismus. „Die AfD lässt tatsächlich die Maske immer mehr fallen“, sagte Wagner der Deutschen Presse-Agentur in Erfurt. So habe der Thüringer AfD-Chef Björn Höcke kürzlich bei Telegram ein Zitat des Publizisten Arthur Moeller van den Bruck verbreitet, der in den 1920er Jahren das Buch „Das Dritte Reich“ geschrieben hat. „Das ist ein offener NS-Bezug – und zwar zustimmend“, sagte Wagner, Historiker und an der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität in Jena Inhaber des Lehrstuhls für Geschichte in Medien und Öffentlichkeit.
