Einem Politiker könnte wegen einer erneuten Missachtung der Regeln nun allerdings richtig Ärger drohen. “Heimweg mit dem – wieder nicht pünktlichen”, schrieb Stephan Brandner (54, AfD) auf seinem Twitter-Profil. (…) Unter seinem Text fügte er dann noch ein Foto von sich ein, wie er aus dem Zug schaut. Doch ein Detail fiel bei dem Post des Abgeordneten besonders auf: Brandner trug keine Maske. Dabei ist eine Mund-Nasen-Bedeckung während der Fahrt eigentlich Pflicht. Ein Nutzer wollte bei Brandners Regelstoß wohl nicht einfach wegschauen und meldete den Tweet den Behörden. “@Polizei Thüringen kümmern Sie sich um den typ?”, schrieb er und verlinkte auch die Bahn. “@Deutsche Bahn erteilen Sie bitte ein allgemeines Nutzungsverbot für den Spinner der es offenbar trotz Studiums der Rechtswissenschaft nicht hinbekommt die Maskenpflicht umzusetzen? Vermutlich ist er wieder auf die Toilette geflüchtet”, schrieb er. (Rechtschreibung übernommen) (…) Die Polizei Thüringen reagierte nämlich auf die Zeilen des Nutzers und schrieb: “Wer bereits das Tragen einer Maske als unangenehm empfindet, wird ein Beatmungsgerät hassen. Wir haben den Tweet gesichert und leiten ihn zuständigkeitshalber an die Kollegen der Bundespolizei weiter.”

In April 2020, the United Nation’s Secretary-General, António Guterres, addressed members of the Security Council by warning them that the COVID-19 pandemic could threaten global peace and security . If the health crisis was not managed effectively, he feared that its negative economic consequences, along with a mismanaged government response, would provide an opportunity for white supremacists, right-wing extremists and others to promote division, social unrest and even violence to achieve their objectives. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer was the focus of kidnapping plot by right-wing extremists. In early October 2020, less then a month before the United States federal election, the FBI thwarted an alleged terrorism plot by right-wing extremists to kidnap the Michigan governor, storm the state capital building and commit acts of violence against law enforcement. Their aim, according to court documents, was to start a ‘civil war leading to societal collapse.’ To date, 14 men have been arrested on charges of terrorism and other related crimes. Several of them are linked to the Wolverine Watchmen , a militia-type group in Michigan that espouses anti-government and anti-law enforcement views. (…) The composition of many of these organizations are right-wing terror groups whose grievances are rooted in racism, misogyny, anti-Semitism, anti-LGBTQ sentiments, Islamophobia and perceptions of government overreach. Given the wide range of grievances, these groups are defined as being complex, with overlapping viewpoints from similarly minded individuals advocating different but related ideologies.

Eine Polizistin hat sich am VG Düsseldorf erfolgreich gegen Rechtsextremismus-Vorwürfe gewehrt. Ein Bild mit einer Hitler-Parodie, das vor sechs Jahren in einen Polizei-Chat geschickt wurde, stelle kein schwerwiegendes Dienstvergehen dar. Eine angeblich an einer rechtsextremen Chat-Gruppe beteiligte Polizistin hat sich vor Gericht erfolgreich gegen die Vorwürfe gewehrt. Das Düsseldorfer Verwaltungsgericht (VG) entschied am Donnerstag in einem Eilverfahren, dass das gegenüber der Beamtin ausgesprochene Verbot der Führung der Dienstgeschäfte rechtswidrig ist und setzte ihre Suspendierung aus. Mit einer bemerkenswerten Begründung: Das zuständige Landesamt habe offenbar nicht erkannt, dass es sich bei der beanstandeten Hitler-Datei um eine Parodie handele, mit der Hitler verspottet werde. Der Vorwurf, die Beamtin habe den Boden der freiheitlich-demokratischen Grundordnung verlassen, sei somit “fernliegend”, zumal nicht einmal klar sei, ob sie die Datei überhaupt wahrgenommen habe (Beschl. v. 22.10.2020, Az. 2 L 1910/20). (…) Allein aus der Gruppenmitgliedschaft könne nicht ohne Weiteres auf die Kenntnisnahme des Bildes geschlossen werden. Geschmacklose Weihnachts-Parodie, aber keine Straftat Auch die Annahme des Landes, es handele sich bei dem Bild um ein solches mit rechtsradikalem Gedankengut oder sonst von strafrechtlicher Relevanz, beruhe laut Gericht auf keiner tragfähigen Grundlage. Es hätte auch der Kontext in den Blick genommen werden müssen. “Dies ist indes offensichtlich genau so wenig geschehen, wie eine Berücksichtigung des – der Kammer nicht zur Verfügung gestellten – zugehörigen Chatverlaufs”, so das VG. Nach einer “verhältnismäßig kurzen” Recherche im Internet habe die Kammer die fragliche Bilddatei auffinden können, hieß es weiter. Es handele sich bei dem Bild um einen Ausschnitt aus einer Parodie auf der Videoplattform Youtube mit dem Titel “Weihnachten mit Hitler”. Die abgebildete Person sei offensichtlich nicht Adolf Hitler, sondern jemand, der mittels einer Parodie Hitler verspotte, überzeichne und der Lächerlichkeit preisgebe. Die Parodie könnte “zwar ohne Weiteres als äußerst Geschmacklos empfunden werden” – die vom Landesamt gezogene Schlussfolgerung, hierin liege ein “schwerwiegendes Dienstvergehen” und ein “Verstoß gegen die politische Treuepflicht”, teilte das Gericht dagegen nicht.

Nazi-Propaganda im Chat: 26-jähriger Kärntner wegen Wiederbetätigung verurteilt

Ein 26-jähriger Kärntner ist am Mittwoch am Landesgericht Klagenfurt wegen NS-Wiederbetätigung zu 18 Monaten bedingter Haft verurteilt worden. Er war geständig, propagandistische Bilder, teilweise mit Texten und auch ein Video auf seinem Handy gespeichert und manches davon auch weitergeleitet zu haben. Vor allem in zwei Chatgruppen schickte man sich mit Grußbotschaften versehene, einschlägige Bilder sowie mit Hakenkreuzen übersäte Pin-ups in Nazi-Uniform-Elementen. So gab es etwa Ostergrüße mit einem Bild von einem Hitlergruß-Mädchen und Hakenkreuz-Ostereiern, halbnackte Frauen mit Hakenkreuzbinde und Hitler in einem Autowerk als Experte für “Vergaser”. Staatsanwältin Gabriele Lutschounig sagte, einzeln betrachtet könnte man manche Bilder noch für einen Scherz halten, in ihrer Gesamtheit zeigten sie aber eine fremdenfeindliche Gesinnung, Antisemitismus, Rassismus sowie Verharmlosung von NS-Gedankengut und Holocaust. Es sei eine Gefahr für die Demokratie, eine solche “humoristisch verzerrende Darstellung” eben genau Verharmlosung – angeklagt war entsprechend der Paragraf 3g Verbotsgesetz.

Sources tell us the platform tweaked its code to help right-wing publishers and throttle sites like Mother Jones. Near the close of the first year of the Trump presidency, executives at Facebook were briefed on some major changes to its News Feed—the code that determines which of the zillions of posts on the platform any one of us is shown when we look at Facebook. The story the company has publicly told is that it was working to “bring people closer together” by showing us more posts from friends and family, and to prioritize “trusted” and “informative” sources of news. The changes would also reduce how much news most people see, and therefore decrease revenue for many publishers. What wasn’t publicly known until now is that Facebook actually ran experiments to see how the changes would affect publishers—and when it found that some of them would have a dramatic impact on the reach of right-wing “junk sites,” as a former employee with knowledge of the conversations puts it, the engineers were sent back to lessen those impacts. As the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, they came back in January 2018 with a second iteration that dialed up the harm to progressive-leaning news organizations instead. In fact, we have now learned that executives were even shown a slide presentation that highlighted the impact of the second iteration on about a dozen specific publishers—and Mother Jones was singled out as one that would suffer, while the conservative site the Daily Wire was identified as one that would benefit. These changes were pushed by Republican operatives working in Facebook’s Washington office under Vice President of Global Public Policy Joel Kaplan (who later made headlines for demonstratively supporting his friend Brett Kavanaugh during confirmation hearings). Asked for comment, Facebook spokesperson Andy Stone would only say, “We did not make changes with the intent of impacting individual publishers. We only made updates after they were reviewed by many different teams across many disciplines to ensure the rationale was clear and consistent and could be explained to all publishers.”

Newly revealed court documents show threats against law-enforcement officials who dared to go after racist thugs. When members of a white supremacist street-fighting gang caught charges for their participation in a deadly riot, fellow travelers on the website Gab had a suggestion: Doxx the U.S. officials involved in the case, or maybe just kill them. A newly unsealed search warrant application from October 2018 reveals that feds were interested in threats made to federal law enforcement on the extremist-friendly social network. The threats concerned a Department of Justice official, a U.S. attorney, a prosecutor, and others involved in a federal case against members of the white supremacist Rise Above Movement. Months earlier, one of the Gab users involved had also helped doxx a blogger, attracting attention from another user who would later be accused of massacring worshippers in a Pittsburgh synagogue. The warrant sought information—including private messages and IP information—on Chad Bagwell, an Alabama man who posted on Gab and attended at least one white supremacist rally under his own name. The investigation appears to have begun when Bagwell suggested another prominent Gab user doxx (that is, reveal private information on) federal officials, particularly in the Justice Department. The search warrant’s unsealing this week came at an appropriate time: Earlier this month, at least 15 people were arrested in three different alleged far-right plots to kidnap state or local officials. Two of those plots, which targeted Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, were organized online. (…) Bagwell and Griffin may have had offline connections. Bagwell attended at least one rally (a “White Lives Matter” event in Oct. 2017) alongside the League of the South, of which Griffin is a member. Bagwell is also a frequent commenter on Griffin’s blog, including authoring a recent comment claiming to have joined the group.A Gab representative declined to comment on the search warrant.
“Like most technology companies with millions of users, Gab regularly communicates with U.S. law enforcement on matters concerning public safety,” the representative told The Daily Beast. “We consider all communications with U.S. law enforcement to be confidential and do not publicly comment on specific cases.” Court documents reveal that Gab complied with the warrant, emailing the relevant files to investigators. It was unclear whether Gab notified the involved users, specifically Bagwell. Doxxing and murder plots are technically against Gab’s rules. However, the site has sometimes turned a blind eye to users’ bad behavior, allowing them to stay on the site after posting private information. Bagwell’s account, for instance, is still live on Gab, and uses his legal name, despite Gab receiving a warrant for his alleged activity. Gab took a reputational hit after the Tree of Life massacre, which Bowers appeared to advertise on the website. But although some of its most prominent users moved elsewhere (or in multiple high-profile cases, went to prison), Gab did little to change the site’s culture, which had previously seen people like Bagwell build followings based on their incendiary remarks. Hayden said the lack of moderation, plus the comfort people like Bagwell felt in using their legal names, had real consequences. “Gab, from 2017, the lead-up to Charlottesville, up until the Tree of Life massacre, was the worst and most dangerous website I’ve ever seen,” he said. “It had this combination of this say-anything mentality, and it gave people a capacity to promote their brand and become public figures.”

Tiktok verschärft Vorgehen gegen rassistische und antisemitische Inhalte

Die Videoplattform Tiktok verschärft ihr Vorgehen gegen rassistische Inhalte und Stereotype gegen religiöse Minderheiten. Der Online-Dienst erklärte am Mittwoch, während bereits Videos mit Hassrede und Ideologien des Hasses wie Neonazismus und Rassismus gelöscht würden, werde dies nun auch auf „verwandte Ideologien“ ausgeweitet. Als Beispiele nannte Tiktok den „weißen Nationalismus“, die Theorie von einem „Genozid an Weißen“, die Identitäre Bewegung und Theorien von einer Überlegenheit von Männern gegenüber Frauen. Tiktok kündigte zudem an, „Falschinformationen und verletzende Stereotype über Juden, Muslime und andere Gruppen“ löschen zu wollen. Das umfasse unter anderem Falschinformationen über bekannte jüdische Persönlichkeiten oder Familien, die genutzt würden, um Antisemitismus zu verbreiten. Das Leugnen des Holocaust ist auf Tiktok bereits verboten. Gelöscht werden sollen fortan auch Inhalte, die gegen Lesben, Schwule, Bisexuelle sowie trans- und intersexuelle Menschen gerichtet sind. Dazu gehört auch Werbung für sogenannte Konversionstherapien. Online-Plattformen wie Twitter, Facebook und Tiktok stehen unter großem Druck, gegen Hassrede im Netz vorzugehen.

The platform announced an update to how it will enforce its community guidelines against anti-LGBTQ+ and other hateful content. In a Tuesday blog post, TikTok has announced a plan to remove hateful posts on the video-based social media platform. The company will start cracking down even more on anti-LGBTQ+ content, white supremacist and Nazi content, and videos that spread falsehoods about Jewish people, Muslims, and other minority groups. “As part of our efforts to prevent hateful ideologies from taking root, we will stem the spread of coded language and symbols that can normalise hateful speech and behaviour,” the blog post read. When it comes to anti-LGBTQ+ content, that now includes videos that promote harmful and discredited practices like conversion therapy, where LGBTQ+ people are encouraged to “pray away the gay” or undergo electroshock therapy to “turn” them straight and cisgender.
