#College workers fired for including their #pronouns in emails – #HoughtonUniversity #MethodistChurch #GenderIndentity

Raegan Zelaya and Shua Wilmot, residence hall directors at Houghton University, were fired from their positions, after they put “she/her” and “he/him” in their signatures. Alumni are criticising a small New York Christian university for firing two employees who refused to remove gender pronouns from their email signatures. In April, Raegan Zelaya and Shua Wilmot, residence hall directors at Houghton University, were fired from their positions, after they put “she/her” and “he/him” on their emails. In a widely-circulated termination letter to Ms Zelaya, the school wrote that it fired her shortly before the end of the semester “as a result of your refusal to remove pronouns in your email signature” and because she criticised the decision in the student newspaper. Mr Wilmot said he was also accused of making a “threat” towards the general superintendent of the Wesleyan Church. The university is affiliated with the conservative branch of the Methodist Church. Mr Wilmot had written what he described as a “constructive letter” to Superintendent Wayne Schmidt about the church’s views on gender identity and expression, saying they were outdated and problematic. A spokesperson for the university told The New York Times this week that the school “has never terminated an employment relationship based solely on the use of pronouns in staff email signatures”. “Over the past years, we’ve required anything extraneous be removed from email signatures, including Scripture quotes,” a spokesperson said. In a video last month explaining the incident, the ex-residence hall directors, neither of whom is transgender, said their decision to put pronouns in emails was meant both as a gesture of inclusivity, and because people often weren’t able to tell their genders from their first names over email.

siehe auch: A University Fired 2 Employees for Including Their Pronouns in Emails The firings set off a debate at Houghton University, a small Christian institution in western New York, which said its decision was not based only on the pronoun listings. When Raegan Zelaya and Shua Wilmot decided to include their pronouns at the end of their work emails, they thought they were doing a good thing: following what they viewed as an emerging professional standard, and also sending a message of inclusivity at the Christian university where they worked. But their bosses at Houghton University, in upstate New York, saw the matter very differently. Administrators at Houghton, which was founded and is now owned by a conservative branch of the Methodist Church, asked Ms. Zelaya and Mr. Wilmot, two residence hall directors, to remove the words “she/her” and “he/him” from their email signatures, saying they violated a new policy. When they refused to do so, both employees were fired, just weeks before the end of the semester. Houghton’s firing of the two staff members has dismayed some of its alumni, nearly 600 of whom signed a petition in protest. And it comes as gender and sexuality have become major fault lines in an increasingly divided nation, and after other faith-based organizations, including Yeshiva University in Manhattan, have argued that First Amendment protections of religious freedom allow them to treat gay and transgender people differently than others.

The white supremacist who broadcast hate from a quiet west Wales community

Neighbours had no idea who James Allchurch – who called himself Sven Longshanks online – was up to. Blink and you could miss Gelli – half a dozen houses, a post box, a chapel, and a defibrillator on the banks of the Afon Syfni stream. A quieter place it is hard to imagine. So when armed police turned up to raid a one-bedroom cottage in the Pembrokeshire hamlet just before Christmas 2019 it’s fair to say it caused something of a stir. In the way of rumours, there were suggestions the convoy of police vehicles had come to town in connection with firearm offences or possibly the downloading of indecent images. If the police raid surprised locals, the reason for their presence shocked them – their neighbour James Allchurch had been running a far-right racist podcast right under their noses. Allchurch had lived in the little rented cottage in Gelli for four or five years by the time police came knocking. People living in the area say the 51-year-old kept himself to himself and didn’t go out much, nor did he seem to have many visitors. Unemployed, with mobility problems, and taking regular doses of testosterone, he would occasionally pick up shopping for the older residents. Behind closed doors and unbeknown to those living around him Allchurch was spending upwards of 12 hours a day producing material for his podcast which was originally called Radio Aryan but was later renamed Radio Albion. He may have been James in the village but online he used the alias Sven Longshanks, a reference to King Edward I who was known as Edward Longshanks and was responsible for expelling Jewish people from England in 1290. The listening figures for the podcast may have been modest – around 4,000 people apparently listened to the pods when they were published, though the overall listenership to the huge archive of episodes is unclear – but it came to the attention of counter-terrorism police in the north of England following concerns it featured thousands of recordings which contained material that could be considered racist, homophobic, sexist, anti-Semitic or anti-Islamic. Following a lengthy investigation by detectives Allchurch was eventually charged with 15 offences under the Public Order Act of distributing audio material to stir up racial hatred.

James Allchurch, 51, was sentenced to two-and-a-half years on Monday for spreading racist and anti-Semitic material. But the site remained accessible and new posts were uploaded as recently as Friday. Counter-terrorism police said only material that met a criminal threshold could be removed. On the site, Allchurch goes by the name Sven Longshanks. Edward I, also known as Edward Longshanks, ordered the expulsion of the Jews from England in 1290.

Russia’s Response to Zelenskyy’s Success in Europe: Hundreds of Identical Fabricated News Reports

On Monday, May 15, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrapped up his three-day European tour, reportedly gaining for his nation unwavering diplomatic support from the Vatican, and the governments of Germany, France and Britain, along with substantial military aid from those countries. Meanwhile, in Russia, hundreds of news reports about Zelenskyy’s visit in Europe came out with identical headlines and context. These reports are designed to reach millions of Russians domestically and abroad. Citing responses to Zelenskyy’s tweet that announced his arrival in London, U.K. on May 15, the Russian news media claimed: “Twitter users ridiculed Ukrainian president Zelenskyy’s Europe tour,” as reported by the state-owned news agency RIA Novosti; the main television channels 1 TV and Ren-TV; the popular newspapers Moskovsky Komsomelets, Komsomolskaya Pravda and Argumenty Nedeli; the Russian government’s official newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta, and by hundreds regional news outlets across Russia. These news reports are false. Russian media fabricated the news report based on six tweets, two of which have either been deleted or never existed. The remaining four display all the characteristics of internet trolling. Two are from anonymous accounts that have zero to 30 followers, despite being on Twitter since 2009. The fifth account is also anonymous but verified, and it uses a profanity phrase as its username and tweets mostly adult content. Only the sixth Twitter account belongs to a real person, one Zimbabwean by the name Tendayi Zinyama who frequently tweets in support of ZANU-PF (Zimbabwe African National Union Patriotic Front) and of Russia’s war in Ukraine. Often described as “tyrannical” by independent observers, Zimbabwe’s ruling ZANU-PF party also is mired in charges of deep corruption, and it has retained close ties with the Kremlin since the late 1970s. Moscow has been providing its leader Robert Mugabe with military aid and diplomatic support in exchange for access to the country’s natural resources, mainly gold and platinum.
