White Supremacist Active Clubs Are Breeding on Telegram
A “friendlier” front for racist extremism has spread rapidly across the US in recent months, as active club channels network on Telegram’s encrypted messaging app. ON MONDAY EVENING, Gabrielle Hanson, a pro-MAGA mayoral candidate in Tennessee, walked through the parking lot of Franklin City Hall, on her way to debate her opponent, incumbent Ken Moore, in what was meant to be little more than a typical campaign stop in the small city of Franklin just south of Nashville. What made this scene so different was the fact that Hanson was flanked by members of the Tennessee Active Club, an openly neo-Nazi hate group. One of the men escorting Hanson into the building was Sean Kauffmann, the reported leader of the group whom the Southern Poverty Law Center says has been part of the white supremacist movement for years, and was photographed giving a Nazi salute at a Black Lives Matter rally. The group stood outside the building as the event took place, and they told a local reporter that they were there to provide security for Hanson, claiming that “credible threats” had been made against her. The Franklin Police Department tells WIRED that they have no information about threats against Hanson. Instead, the police department is investigating death threats made against local journalists by Kauffmann’s group in their Telegram channel just hours after the campaign event ended. The threats, which included anti-Semitic slurs and references to white supremacist literature, featured the image of one reporter’s home after one follower asked: “Who is this person? Where can I find them so I can beat the shit out of them?” Active clubs are a decentralized network of groups that have recently become the new, so-called friendlier face of the white supremacist movement, by promoting physical fitness and brotherhood while hiding their true nature. The movement has experienced explosive growth in recent months. For researchers who have been tracking the rise of this movement, the use of Telegram to disseminate threats like those in Franklin highlights the crucial role the encrypted messaging app has played in helping these groups recruit, organize, and spread hate speech to a huge following.

Accused White Supremacist Wrote Racist Rant Just Before Killing Muslim Family, Court Hears – #terror
The Canadian is accused of killing four people by running them down with his truck. A self-admitted white supremacist who is accused of killing a Muslim family by intentionally running them over with his truck penned a racist manifesto just weeks before the killings. On June 6, 2021, a London, Ontario family waiting for a light to change so they could cross the street was run down by a black truck traveling at high speed. Witnesses say the driver intentionally swerved to hit the family. Salman Afzaal, 46, his wife Madiha Salman, 44, their 15-year-old daughter Yumna Afzaal, and Salman Afzaal’s 74-year-old mother, Talat Afzaal, were all killed in the attack. The only survivor was the family’s nine-year-old son. Nathaniel Veltman, 22, was arrested nearby outside the truck where he was found wearing a bulletproof vest and military helmet. Veltman faces four counts of first degree murder, one count of attempted murder, and terrorism charges. Veltman pleaded not guilty to the charges but five weeks into the trial it’s clear to see the evidence is stacked well against him. These include a lengthy interrogation interview conducted shortly after the murders in which Veltman admitted he was a white supremacist and bragged about the crimes, and now a rambling screed. The writing, the court heard, was full of anti-Muslim hate speech and indicated that Veltman hoped to inspire neo-Nazis to conduct similar attacks. On October 4, the court heard evidence of Veltman’s “A White Awakening” which had taken inspiration from Brenton Tarrant, the neo-Nazi who killed 52 Muslims in New Zealand in 2019. “A White Awakening” was structured similarly and ended with an obvious reference to Tarrant’s infamous ramblings. Evidence acquired from hard drives found at Veltman’s home show that just months before the killings, the young man had downloaded the livestream Tarrant made of his killings and watched it repeatedly. Veltman also had the written work of Anders Breivik, a neo-Nazi who killed 77 people (who were mostly children) in Norway in 2011. An agreed statement of facts between the prosecution and defense states that Veltman “was the author of all versions, including previous versions of the documents entitled A White Awakening.” A portion of the manifesto was read out in the court by the prosecution. The portion showed that Veltman was fixated on Muslims, whom he described as invaders, and wholeheartedly believed the popular “great replacement” conspiracy theory which posits that people of color are attempting to replace whites in Western and European countries. The language used in the Veltman’s writing echoes that of the hyper online far-right including the terms “cuckservative” and “libtards” and frequently uses various anti-Muslim slurs. One of the longest sections is about how white people need to stop fighting and join arms against Muslims. The manifesto also includes a long rambling portion about how a whites-only society would create a utopia where drug use, “cancel culture,” and depression would disappear.

Far-Right Tech Team Racists on the notorious troll site 4chan are using a powerful new and free AI-powered image generator service offered by Microsoft to create antisemitic propaganda, according to posts reviewed by Bellingcat. Users of 4chan, which has frequently hosted hate speech and played home to posts by mass shooters, tasked Bing Image Creator to create photo-realistic antisemitic caricatures of Jews and, in recent days, shared images created by the platform depicting Orthodox men preparing to eat a baby, carrying migrants across the US border (the latter a nod to the racist Great Replacement conspiracy theory), and committing the 9/11 attacks. Meanwhile, users on multiple forums associated with the far right are sharing strategies to avoid the tech giant’s lax content moderation to create more racist material. One guide (uploaded multiple times this week to free file hosting services Imgur and Catbox) shows several examples of “good vs. bad AI memes” generated by Bing Image Creator, recommending that memes be funny and provocative, have a “redpilling message”, and be “easy to understand”. One of the AI-generated memes it claims is effective depicts male immigrants of colour with knives chasing a white woman with a Scandinavian country’s flag in the background, while another shows a crying Pepe the Frog being forced to take a vaccine at gunpoint. The guide and the image of an Orthodox man depicted carrying out the 9/11 attacks were first reported on by 404 Media.

Arizona Republic Show Caption Two Phoenix-area rabbis are among prominent Jewish community members from across the country who recently signed a letter denouncing what they argue is Elon Musk’s embrace of antisemitism on his social media platform, X, formerly known as Twitter. Published Tuesday, the X Out Hate letter calls for Amazon, Apple and Disney to pull their ads from X, and for Apple and Google to remove the platform from their app stores. As of Friday evening, 159 had signed the letter, which deems Musk’s actions on X as contributing to the spread of antisemitic discourse on the popular platform. The letter highlights his criticism of leading Jewish civil rights organization the Anti-Defamation League and his unbanning of notorious antisemites. “As leaders of all backgrounds, current and former leaders of Jewish organizations, artists, and activists from all over the country, we have watched in horror as a new stage in antisemitic discourse has spread like wildfire on one of America’s largest social media networks. All of this has been facilitated and enabled by its owner: Elon Musk,” reads the letter.

We have diverse ideologies and beliefs, but we have come together to address the danger Elon Musk and X represent to Jews and others. As Jewish leaders of all backgrounds, current and former leaders of Jewish organizations, artists, and activists from all over the country, we have watched in horror as a new stage in antisemitic discourse has spread like wildfire on one of America’s largest social media networks. All of this has been facilitated and enabled by its owner: Elon Musk. We are speaking of course of X (formerly Twitter), which since his takeover has become a breeding ground for some of the most dangerous antisemitic discourse in America. It has made fringe figures mainstream, spread conspiracy theories that endanger Jews, reinstated neo-Nazis and other antisemites, and destroyed the content moderation that once kept things like Holocaust denial and hate speech minimized. Just as bad, Musk has himself engaged in antisemitism and promoted other antisemites to his more than 155 million followers. We are alarmed by his targeting of the ADL: not because of our views of the organization (we represent a wide range of views, including some who fundamentally oppose the ADL as well as staunch supporters), but because of the way he has used the organization as a very clear stand in for an antisemitic representation of Jewish power.

Elon Musk sued for defamation for falsely identifying man as neo-Nazi protestor
Musk has been sued for defamation many times before. Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of X (formerly known as Twitter), is being sued for defamation over posts he made falsely accusing a man of pretending to be a neo-Nazi to stir up a “false flag” operation earlier this year. The suit was filed in Texas court Monday by Ben Brody, a 22-year-old California man, as first reported by HuffPost. Brody accused Musk of having triggered a massive harassment campaign against him through a series of misleading posts about an Oregon neo-Nazi brawl this summer. In June, a fight broke out between two far-right groups at an Oregon City pride festival. Footage of the fight circulated across social media, and soon, users started falsely claiming one of the men was a federal agent and attempted to identify him. Brody was wrongfully identified as the man in the video. Musk replied to several false X posts about Brody, amplifying them to his more than 147 million followers at the time. On June 27th, Musk replied to a post containing a video of the fight alleging that Brody was part of a “false flag” operation. “Looks like one is a college student (who wants to join the govt) and another is maybe an Antifa member, but nonetheless a probably false flag situation,” Musk wrote on X. As of publication, Musk has not deleted the post. “Being defamed by someone as famous as Musk was an utterly terrifying experience, and it has left Ben stunned, disoriented, and worried about the consequences on his future,” Mark Bankston, Brody’s lawyer, wrote on X Monday. Bankston previously represented two Sandy Hook parents in a case against Alex Jones, the notorious conspiracy theorist who falsely peddled the lie that the 2012 shooting never happened. The parents won $45 million in damages.

Elon Musk, the tech billionaire and far-right sympathizer, has been hit with a defamation lawsuit after he falsely accused a recent college graduate of being a federal agent involved with a neo-Nazi group. Ben Brody, a 22-year-old Jewish man from California, filed the lawsuit against Musk on Monday after he said he and his family were forced to flee their home after continued harassment and threats after Musk promoted a dangerous conspiracy against Brody. “In yet another example of Elon Musk’s serial pattern of slander, he falsely told the world that Ben Brody participated in a violent street brawl on behalf of a neo-Nazi extremist group,” the lawsuit, obtained by HuffPost, alleges. The lawsuit centers around a fight between neo-Nazi group Rose City Nationalists (RCN) and neo-fascist group the Proud Boys that took place in Oregon earlier this year. In video footage that went viral, a member of RCN had his face mask pulled off, and internet sleuths went to work hoping to identify him. But others dismissed the reality of far-right violence by falsely claiming members of the neo-Nazi group were actually federal agents. That included Musk, who amplified the false conspiracy that Brody was the man in the mask, then later suggested Brody was part of a “false flag situation,” in a post on X ― previously called Twitter ― that remains up today. “Musk made these ridiculously false and damaging accusations based on a tweet he had seen from an anonymous far-right extremist Twitter account,” the lawsuit alleges. “After amplifying the claim for two days, Musk personally leveled these accusations against Ben Brody, and it has led to severe personal harassment and permanent damage to his reputation.” Brody is being represented by attorney Mark Bankston of the Texas law firm Farrar & Ball. Bankston previously represented two Sandy Hook parents who won $45 million in damages against conspiracy theorist Alex Jones after Jones spent years falsely claiming the 2012 school shooting that left 20 kids and six adults dead never happened. Jones currently owes more than $1 billion to several Sandy Hook families for his lies. Brody is seeking more than $1 million in damages against Musk
