Extremists are using #AI voice cloning to supercharge #propaganda. Experts say it’s helping them grow – #terror

Researchers warn generative tools are helping militant groups from neo-Nazis to the Islamic State spread ideology. While the artificial intelligence boom is upending sections of the music industry, voice generating bots are also becoming a boon to another unlikely corner of the internet: extremist movements that are using them to recreate the voices and speeches of major figures in their milieu, and experts say it is helping them grow. “The adoption of AI-enabled translation by terrorists and extremists marks a significant evolution in digital propaganda strategies,” said Lucas Webber, a senior threat intelligence analyst at Tech Against Terrorism and a research fellow at the Soufan Center. Webber specializes in monitoring the online tools of terrorist groups and extremists around the world. (…) On the neo-Nazi far-right, adoption of AI-voice cloning software has already become particularly prolific, with several English-language versions of Adolf Hitler’s speeches garnering tens of millions of streams across X, Instagram, TikTok, and other apps. According to a recent research post by the Global Network on Extremism and Technology (GNet), extremist content creators have turned to voice cloning services, specifically ElevenLabs, and feed them archival speeches from the era of the Third Reich, which are then processed into mimicking Hitler in English. Neo-Nazi accelerationists, the kinds who plot acts of terrorism against western governments to provoke a societal collapse, have also turned to these tools to spread more updated versions of their hyper-violent messaging. For example, Siege, an insurgency manual written by American neo-Nazi and proscribed terrorist James Mason that became the veritable bible to organizations like the Base and the now-defunct Atomwaffen Division, was transformed into an audiobook in late November. “For the last several months I have been involved in making an audiobook of Siege by James Mason,” said a prominent neo-Nazi influencer with a heavy presence on X and Telegram, who stitched together the audiobook with the help of AI tools. “Using a custom voice model of Mason, I re-created every newsletter and most of the attached newspaper clippings as in the original published newsletters.” The influencer lauded the power of having Mason’s writing from “pre-internet America” and turning it into a modern-day voice. “But to hear the startling accuracy of predictions made through the early eighties really puts a milestone on the road and it changed my view of our shared cause on a fundamental level,” he said. At its height in 2020, the Base held a book club on Siege, which was an instrumental influence on several members who discussed its benefits in a hypothetical war against the US government. A nationwide FBI counterterrorism probe eventually swept up over a dozen of its members on various terrorism related charges in the same year. “The creator of the audiobook has previously released similar AI content; however, Siege has a more notorious history,” said Joshua Fisher-Birch, a terrorism analyst at the Counter Extremism Project, “due to its cultlike status among some in the online extreme right, promotion of lone actor violence, and being required reading by several neo-Nazi groups that openly endorse terrorism and whose members have committed violent criminal acts”.

Was bislang bekannt ist.

Teenage neo-Nazi, who killed Tajik boy in Moscow suburb, is placed in custody for two months – #terror #Odintsovo

“The teenager accused of stabbing a student at a school in the village of Gorki-2 in Odintsovo has been placed under arrest.” On December 18, the Tver Court in Moscow issued a ruling on the matter. “The court granted the request of the Investigative Committee to place the 15-year-old defendant, charged with ‘murder’ and ‘attempted murder,’ in custody for two months,” the document stated. A report by the news agency does not mention a motive. As a reminder, the 10-year-old Tajik boy, Qobiljon Aliyev, was stabbed to death at his school in by a 15-year-old ninth-grader identified as Timofey K on December 16. The assailant brought a knife to school and also attacked a security guard and other students before being apprehended by police. Before the bloodshed began, Timofey K. approached a group of children and a teacher at the school and asked about their nationality. He recorded this exchange on his phone and later shared it on Telegram. When a security guard advanced, Timofey K doused him in pepper spray and stabbed the man before chasing Qobiljon Aliyev up the stairs and fatally wounding him. Russian media have reported that the attack was likely motivated by xenophobia. Just before the incident, the suspect had shared a “manifesto” with other students — a neo-Nazi document titled “My Rage,” in which he expressed hostility toward Jews, Muslims, anti-fascists, and liberals.

Parents’ head alleges over 100 pupils in Larnaca linked to neo-Nazi group Cyprus

New revelations aired on state television on Friday regarding recent organised neo-Nazi activity at Vergina High School in Larnaca with allegations that more than 100 pupils are actively involved and others have received extremist training abroad. Speaking on CyBC, parent’s association president Loizos Constantinou claimed a ‘structured group’ has been operating for ‘at least two years’ at Vergina, creating what he described as ‘a climate of intimidation’ for other pupils. He said the scale and organisation of the group go far beyond childish provocation or ignorance. “The number of the group is in the three digits,” Constantinou said, suggesting that specific students had travelled to Greece, to a particular location linked to extremist networks. “This means there is a centre recruiting from outside Cyprus,” he warned. Konstantinou said he had information on a group of pupils who travelled recently to Greece to make direct contact with extremist groups. (…) Constantinou lambasted the ‘sheer negligence’ of the school authorities, particularly the failure to remove fascist symbols emblazoned on campus. He said swastikas were left on walls for two or three months, suggesting a message of remarkable tolerance or indifference. “When you enter a school and see slogans and symbols like that, it is like entering a neo-Nazi stronghold,” he said. “The simplest thing would have been for them to disappear the next day, in a matter of minutes.” He added that the school knew which pupils were involved and could have identified those responsible quickly, including those appearing in photographs and those coordinating the activity. “You do not need many people to cause damage,” he said. “The mass is affected.” According to Constantinou, the group has been expanding steadily over the past two years, and the education ministry holds additional evidence.

Authorities are moving swiftly after photos circulated online showing a group of Larnaca high school students giving Nazi salutes, drawing swastikas, and sharing extremist ideology. While the Education Ministry and the school are handling the matter internally, the cybercrime unit has launched its own investigation to trace the social media account that posted the content. Identifying the students is proving tricky, as some faces were obscured in the images. School officials are reportedly preparing disciplinary measures for those involved. The principal is expected to impose penalties aimed at addressing both the actions and the wider influence these students may have tried to exert on classmates; Over 100 youths in Larnaca “Nazi organisation” travelled to Greece for training, parents’ head warns More than 100 young people from Larnaca belong to a “Nazi organisation” that has sent members to Greece for training with extremist groups, the head of Cyprus’s parents’ confederation warned on Friday. Loizos Konstantinou, president of the Confederation of Secondary Education Parents’ Associations, said a fascist cell of pupils at Vergina Lyceum has operated for two years, creating what he called a “climate of terrorism” amongst other pupils whilst school authorities left swastikas on walls for months. “The number of the group is in the three digits,” Konstantinou told state television, revealing that students “visited Greece, they didn’t go on holiday, they went to a specific place. So it means there is a centre outside Cyprus.” The disclosure escalates a controversy over students photographed giving Nazi salutes, allegedly proselytising others to their organisation, and vandalising the school with swastikas. (…) Konstantinou accused the school of negligence. “When you see the swastika on the school wall and leave it there for two, three months. What is that? The simplest thing the next day should have disappeared in a few minutes.” He said students entering the school saw slogans, describing it as looking “like you’re entering the neo-Nazi lair”. The school knew which children were involved and could easily provide details in minutes, he said. The group has been expanding over the past two years, with the Ministry holding further evidence. “We have become very concerned. For this reason we contacted the Ministry and procedures are proceeding with investigations and today there will be further development,” Konstantinou said.
