A new Russian military formation in Africa with the same name as a Nazi unit is trying to recruit former Wagner fighters and Ukraine war vets

Russia’s defense ministry created a new military unit this summer called the Africa Corps.  The unit announced a recruitment campaign targeting former Wagner mercenaries and Ukraine war veterans. It’s promising a “high” salaries, “competent” commanders, and an alternative to a “peaceful” life. A new Russian military formation with the same name as a Nazi unit is trying to recruit former Wagner Group mercenaries and soldiers who fought in Ukraine for combat operations in Africa. Russia’s defense ministry created the Africa Corps over the summer as a means of expanding Moscow’s footprint on the continent and in the Middle East, and the new force appeared to announce an extensive recruitment campaign in a newly formed Telegram channel this week. It’s promising an unspecified “high salary,” payments in foreign currency, service under “competent commanders,” medical care, and social benefits. The new initiative looks to be the latest sign of Wagner’s diminishing independence in Africa, where it long maintained a clandestine — and deadly — presence in several countries on the continent until the war in Ukraine shot the mercenary group into the limelight, thanks to its brutal tactics on the battlefield. After Wagner’s June mutiny, Russia moved to assume more control over the organization, which has only increased since the August death of its leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin. The long-term fate of the mercenary group in Africa has, however, largely remained unclear over the past few months. On Telegram this week, the Africa Corps said that it’s prioritizing the recruitment of Russians who previously fought in Ukraine, as well as current and former Wagner mercenaries, who make up around half of the corps’ personnel. The unit said it’s looking for personnel who have various combat specialties, including operating tanks, artillery pieces, drones, air-defense systems, and armored fighting vehicles.

The notorious Russian mercenary Wagner Group has adopted a new name in the Sahel region of West Africa that happens to be identical to the one used by the Nazis’ African battalions during World War II. The paramilitary group now known as “Africa Corps,” closely mirroring the Nazi “Afrika Korps,” has been shoring up power in the Central African Republic, Libya, and other African nations since at least 2018. Hitler created the Afrika Korps in 1941 to help Italy, part of the Axis, maintain and expand its territorial gains in Northern Africa. The Nazi leader gave the infamous commander Edwin Rommel the job of leading the elite unit until it dissolved in 1943. Wagner’s name change appeared to come as Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yunus-bek Yevkurov visited several African nations, including Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, in early December to maintain Russia’s presence in the region during the period of transition, French newspaper Le Monde reported.

Prague mass shooting timeline: What we know about the Charles University attack that left 14 dead

The killer has been named as David Kozak, a student at the university who is suspected of killing a father and daughter last week The popular tourist destination of Prague has been left reeling after a lone gunman opened fire on students at a top university, in what has become the country’s worst mass shooting. Social media videos captured the panic that broke out on Thursday afternoon at Charles University in the city centre, with tourists taking cover and a group of desperate students clinging to a building ledge in a bid to save their lives. Czech police raced to the scene of the shooting at Jan Palach Square shortly after 3pm, and were confronted with the horrifying reality that 13 people had been killed, with the gunman taking his own life shortly afterwards. The gunman, who has been named as 24-year-old David Kozak, killed himself after attempting to hide in a gallery and being followed to the roof. Described as an excellent student with no previous criminal convictions, it has since emerged that Kozak is suspected to be responsible for the death of his father, and the fatal shooting of a man and his two-month-old daughter in a woodland area last week. David Kozak has been identified as the gunman (Czech Police) Ahead of the mass shooting at Charles University, he is thought to have kept a diary in Russian on messaging app Telegram, writing: “I want to do a school shooting and possibly suicide.” Among those that have been injured, 10 of them are in a serious condition, Prague‘s Police Chief Martin Vondrasek told reporters.

A STUDENT who massacred 13 people in a horror gun rampage in Prague was reportedly obsessed with a Russian schoolgirl shooter. David Kozak, 24, opened fire with a sniper rifle at a university in the Czech capital on Thursday afternoon – a week after allegedly murdering a dad and a newborn baby. He has been described by neighbours as a “nerd” who was fascinated with weapons. And Telegram posts appeared to reveal Kozak’s chilling plans to “do a school shooting and possibly suicide” – inspired by a school shooting in Bryansk, western Russia, on December 7. Alina Afanaskina, 14, shot a student and wounded five others before turning the gun on herself. “Alina Afanaskina helped me too much,” Kozak, a Russian speaker, said in his Telegram messages. “I always wanted to kill, I thought I would become a maniac in the future. “I realised that it was much more profitable to do mass murders rather than serial ones. I sat. Waited. Dreamed. “But Alina became the last point. It was as if she had come to my aid from heaven just in time.” He often posted about his “miserable life” and said he “always wanted to kill someone”; Prague shooting: Everything we know about David Kozak as link to Russian Telegram is made Czech authorities are probing a possible link between the gunman and a series of Russian language messages posted on social media app Telegram. Czech authorities are probing whether mass Russian shootings influenced David Kozak to carry out a massacre at a Prague university. They have found Russian language messages posted on the country’s social media app Telegram – and one indicates the attack may have been influenced by two previous mass shootings in Russia, reports The Independent. One of the shootings was this month at a school in Bryansk near the Ukraine border and the other took place in 2021 in Kazan. David Kozak, 24, opened fire at Charles University in Prague on Thursday afternoon as people fled for their lives to escape the horror as it unfolded. He killed at least 14 people and injured more than 20 – before he was shot dead by police. Kozak was a history student at the university and started the shooting on the fourth floor of the building with legally owned weapons

Montezuma judge may be removed for Nazi imagery and sexually explicit content on Facebook page – #KickHimOut

The New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct officially recommended that William H. Futrell, a judge in the Montezuma Town Court, should be removed. Cornell junior accused of hateful and violent messages against Jewish has appeal of detention order filed by defender The decision was made public on Thursday, Dec. 21, and concluded that the judge should be removed as he posted Nazi imagery on his Facebook page and publicly liked Facebook accounts that displayed sexually explicit and objectifying content. According to the decision released by the commission, Futrell had liked pages such “Only Men Lovers,” “Dirty Biker Trash,” and “Porngirls.” In July 2022, the commission says Futrell posted a meme of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg wearing Nazi military clothes. Futrell also posted in April 2022 an image of a human skull that appeared identical to the Nazi SS/Totenkopf forces insignia used during World War II. The letters “FF” (Futrell Firearms) were placed above the eye sockets in a way that mimicked the appearance of the “SS” abbreviation of the Nazi Schutzstaffel.

Substack says it will not remove or demonetize Nazi content

Substack co-founder Hamish McKenzie’s plan to ‘strip bad ideas of their power’ is to profit from disseminating them as widely as possible. More than 200 Substack authors asked the platform to explain why it’s “platforming and monetizing Nazis,” and now they have an answer straight from co-founder Hamish McKenzie: I just want to make it clear that we don’t like Nazis either—we wish no-one held those views. But some people do hold those and other extreme views. Given that, we don’t think that censorship (including through demonetizing publications) makes the problem go away—in fact, it makes it worse. While McKenzie offers no evidence to back these ideas, this tracks with the company’s previous stance on taking a hands-off approach to moderation. In April, Substack CEO Chris Best appeared on the Decoder podcast and refused to answer moderation questions. “We’re not going to get into specific ‘would you or won’t you’ content moderation questions” over the issue of overt racism being published on the platform, Best said. McKenzie followed up later with a similar statement to the one today, saying “we don’t like or condone bigotry in any form.” Substack has maintained this don’t moderate but occasionally condone stance for a while now. In a 2020 letter from Substack leaders, including Best and McKenzie, the company wrote, “We just disagree with those who would seek to tightly constrain the bounds of acceptable discourse.” This latest clash over moderation comes after The Atlantic reported on Substack publications with “overt Nazi symbols” in their logos, several from prominent white nationalists, and other posts on Substack supporting those views. McKenzie’s response explains that absent an incitement to violence, Substack’s “decentralized approach to content moderation” response to that material is to publish it, monetize it, and continue to take a cut of the profits.

Amazon still selling antisemitic items: Nazi stamps, Louis Farrakhan books

Amazon continues to market antisemitic paraphernalia through its online marketplace, despite rising concerns about hatred and violence toward Jews following Hamas’ Oct. 7 attacks on Israel. The Seattle-based e-tailer allows vendors to sell Nazi-themed collectibles such as stamps, antisemitic books promoting conspiracies, flags containing fascist symbols, and literature from the Nation of Islam and its firebrand leader Louis Farrakhan. Amazon is selling stamps and coins that feature the likeness of Adolf Hitler. Other stamps include the Nazi swastika as well as images depicting a Nazi rally through Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. Nazi listings on Amazon as of Thursday also included a flag that bears the symbol of the Arrow Cross Party, the far-right group that ruled Hungary in late 1944 and is thought to be responsible for the killings of tens of thousands of Jews and other citizens.
