A 24-year-old man from the Limburg municipality of Diepenbeek has been sentenced to 8 years’ imprisonment by a court in Antwerp. The man was found guilty of being the leader of the online neo-Nazi terrorist network Sturmjäger Division. The court said that he had encourage young people the world over to carry out terrorist attacks. He was said to have “a leading position” within the chat groups, a position that he used to encourage others to carry out attacks. “He encouraged them to overthrow democracy” Neo-Nazi messages and extreme racist statements In 2023, the Belgian State Security Service received the man’s phone number from the Dutch security services. It had cropped up during the Dutch Security Service’s investigation The Base, a neo-Nazi movement founded in 2018 by American Rinaldo Nazzaro. An examining magistrate was appointed to lead an investigation into the Diepenbeek man’s suspected terrorist activities and his data traffic was scrutinised. He ran Sturmjäger Division, a publicly-accessible chat group on Telegram that has some two hundred followers around the world. In it, neo-Nazi messages and extreme racist statements were shared. He also managed a number of private chat groups. Those who wanted to belong to them first had to pass a selection procedure. It was in these private chat groups that he encouraged his followers to commit violent acts. After an undercover detective managed to infiltrate the groups, the suspect was finally able to be arrested in November 2023. During property searches, investigators found, amongst other things, Nazi flags and swastikas as well material to make pipe bombs and Molotov cocktails. Both groups are supporters of a strand within far-right extremism that seeks to establish a white ethno-state by creating tension and chaos through acts of violence.
