New report claims extremist groups are operating under the guise of fitness clubs. Concerns have emerged over an Irish offshoot of the neo-Nazi “Active Club” network, which has been identified as being among several “increasingly dangerous” extremist/far-right groupings in Ireland. The Global Project Against Hate and Extremism (GPAHE) Ireland report, which has just been published, has identified 13 groupings in Ireland that it classifies as far right. The project tracks emerging trends, and analyses the ongoing risks posed by far-right mobilisation here. Its report profiles Comhaltas na nGaedheal (or “fellowship of the Gaels”), the Irish chapter of the network. The so-called Active Club movement is a decentralised, international network of far-right, neo-Nazi and white-supremacist groups that use combat sports such as mixed martial arts, and fitness programmes to recruit members and train them for potential violence. These groups often operate under the guise of fitness clubs, but they are designed to radicalise individuals and prepare them for what they view as an impending “race war”.
