Of the five defendants in pre-trial detention, four allegedly assaulted two Indian immigrants at the Aveiras service area on the A1 motorway on October 5, 2025, according to the indictment issued by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which Lusa had access to, and one allegedly assaulted a member of the group that demonstrated in response to a rally by the far-right party Ergue-te, in Largo de São Domingos, Lisbon, on April 25, 2025. According to the PJ (Judicial Police), 37 people were arrested on Tuesday in operation “Brotherhood”, and another 15 were formally charged, on suspicion of committing the crimes of discrimination and incitement to hatred and violence, aggravated threats and coercion, aggravated assault, and possession of a prohibited weapon. The Public Prosecutor’s Office alleges that the 1143 group was preparing to take on a paramilitary nature in anticipation of a possible “race war” and was organizing two actions for 2026 involving insults against the Prophet Muhammad to provoke negative or even violent reactions from the Muslim community in Portugal. The group was allegedly led by Mário Machado, including from prison, where he has been serving a sentence since May 2025 in another case, for discrimination and incitement to hatred and violence.
