Erneut wurden in Sachsen-Anhalt fünf Gedenksteine aus dem Pflaster gerissen – offenbar am helllichten Tag. Der Staatsschutz ermittelt wegen Diebstahl. Gegenüber dem Nordpark in Magdeburg lagen sieben Steine im Pflaster des Bürgersteigs. Sie erinnerten an die jüdischen Ehepaare Julius und Emmy Hannach, Paul und Wally Wertheim sowie Arie Leo und Ruth Henschke mit ihrem Sohn Albert Max. Sie wohnten im Hohenstaufenring 9 mit Blick auf den Park und starben durch die deutsche NS-Diktatur. Albert Max Henschke wurde 8 Jahre alt. Doch seit letztem Dienstag sind nur noch zwei Erinnerungssteine da und neben ihnen klafft ein rund zehn Zentimeter tiefes Loch. Der polizeiliche Staatsschutz ermittelt wegen Diebstahl. Laut der Polizeiinspektion in Magdeburg klauten Unbekannte die Steine zwischen 10 Uhr und 18 Uhr, am helllichten Tag. Zeu­g:in­nen meldeten sich bislang keine. Erst in der vergangenen Woche wurde in Magdeburg der 800. Stolperstein verlegt (…) Doch das passiert nicht nur in Sachsen-Anhalt: Ebenfalls im Oktober klauten Unbekannte drei Steine in der Nähe von Hannover. In Krefeld in Nordrhein-Westfalen verschwanden im November sieben Steine aus dem Bürgersteig. In Leipzig waren es im Dezember zwei. Das Bundeskriminalamt teilte auf taz-Anfrage kürzlich mit, es könne für 2024 keine Auskunft erteilen. Aber in den drei Jahren zuvor habe die Polizei bundesweit je 20 bis 30 Sachbeschädigungen oder Diebstähle registriert.

Wegen #Bedrohungslage – Mehrere #Schulen in #Duisburg bleiben geschlossen – #terror

In Duisburg findet heute an vielen Schulen kein regulärer Unterricht statt. Die Polizei bestätigte, dass der Grund eine Bedrohungslage ist. Ab morgen soll der Unterricht wieder regulär stattfinden. (…) An der Tür hängt ein Schild, dass die Schule heute geschlossen bleibt. Der Grund ist eine Bedrohungslage. Die Polizei zeigt heute an den betroffenen Schulen gezielt Präsenz, um ein “mögliches Restrisiko zu minimieren”, wie es heißt. Zuletzt mehrere Drohmails Bereits am Freitag hatte die Gesamtschule Duisburg-Mitte eine rechtsradikale Drohmail erhalten, am Sonntag erreichte die Schule noch eine Mail, diesmal mit einer Auflistung weiterer Schulen, die bedroht werden. Auch wenn die Behörden von keiner akuten Bedrohungslage ausgehen, bleiben alle Sekundar- und Gesamtschulen am Montag geschlossen. Insgesamt sind fast 18.000 Schülerinnen und Schüler betroffen. Auch einige Gymnasium gehen in den Distanzunterricht. So zum Beispiel das Abtei-Gymnasium in Hamborn und das Hildegardis-Gymnasium in Mitte. Andere Schulen, wie beispielsweise das Landfermann-Gymnasium, stellten es den Eltern frei, ob sie ihre Kinder zur Schule schicken oder nicht.

National Park Service removes references to Harriet Tubman from ‘Underground Railroad’ webpage

An image of and quote from Harriet Tubman have been removed from a National Parks webpage about the “Underground Railroad,” following several prominent changes to government websites under the Trump administration. The National Parks Service webpage for the “Underground Railroad” used to lead with a quote from Tubman, the railroad’s most famous “conductor”, a comparison on the Wayback Machine between the webpage on January 21 and March 19 shows. Both the quote and an image of Tubman have since been removed, along with several references to “enslaved” people and the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. The Washington Post first reported on the changes. The webpage now leads with commemorative stamps of various civil rights leaders with text including the phrase “Black/White Cooperation.” Whereas previously, the article started with a description of enslaved peoples’ efforts to free themselves and the organization of the Underground Railroad after the Fugitive Slave Act, the article now starts with two paragraphs that emphasize the “American ideals of liberty and freedom” and do not specifically mention slavery. Tubman’s removal from the “Underground Railroad” page “is both offensive and absurd,” Fergus Bordewich, a historian and the author of a book about the Underground Railroad, told CNN Sunday. He described the new webpage as “diminished in value by its brevity.” “To oversimplify history is to distort it,” Bordewich went on. “Americans are not infants: they can handle complex and challenging historical narratives. They do not need to be protected from the truth.” Janell Hobson, a professor of women’s studies at the University at Albany, State University of New York, described Tubman as “one of our greatest American heroes and definitely the greatest liberator in this nation” in an email to CNN. “I hope that National Parks Service realize they owe it to her and other heroes like her to stand in the truth of what this history has been,” she said. There is a separate National Park Service webpage dedicated to Harriet Tubman, who was born into slavery in Maryland before fleeing to Philadelphia. She returned to Maryland over a dozen times to help free other slaves, guiding them through the “Underground Railroad,” a secret network of routes and safe houses. The park service webpage on Tubman does not seem to have been changed since January 28, 2025.

Ten Britons accused of committing war crimes while fighting for Israel in Gaza

Met to be handed dossier of evidence alleging crimes including killings of civilians and aid workers. A war crimes complaint against 10 Britons who served with the Israeli military in Gaza is to be submitted to the Met police by one of the UK’s leading human rights lawyers. Michael Mansfield KC is one of a group of lawyers who will on Monday hand in a 240-page dossier to Scotland Yard’s war crimes unit alleging targeted killing of civilians and aid workers, including by sniper fire, and indiscriminate attacks on civilian areas, including hospitals. The report, which has been prepared by a team of UK lawyers and researchers in The Hague, also accuses suspects of coordinated attacks on protected sites including historic monuments and religious sites, and forced transfer and displacement of civilians. For legal reasons, neither the names of suspects, who include officer-level individuals, nor the full report are being made public. Israel has persistently denied that its political leaders or military have committed war crimes during its assault on Gaza, in which it has killed more than 50,000 people, most of them civilians. The military campaign was in response to Hamas’s 7 October 2023 attack on southern Israel, in which more than 1,200 people, also mostly civilian, were killed and a further 250 taken hostage.

The Shocking Far-Right Agenda Behind the Facial Recognition Tech Used by ICE and the FBI

Thousands of newly obtained documents show that Clearview AI’s founders always intended to target immigrants and the political left. Now their digital dragnet is in the hands of the Trump administration. One evening in March 2017, Hoan Ton-That, an Australian coder building a powerful facial recognition system, emailed his American business partners with a plan to deploy their fledgling technology. “ (…) He later fell in with Silicon Valley neoreactionaries who embraced a far-right, technocratic vision of society. Now Ton-That and his partners wanted to use facial recognition to keep people out of the country. Certain people. Their technology would put that ideology into action. Clearview had compiled a massive biometric database that would eventually contain billions of images the company scraped off the internet and social media without the knowledge of the platforms or their users. Its AI analyzed these images, creating a “faceprint” for every individual. The company let users run a “probe photo” against its database, and if it generated a hit, it displayed the matching images and links to the websites where they originated. This made it easy for Clearview users to further profile their targets with other information found on those webpages: religious or political affiliation, family and friends, romantic partners, sexuality. All without a search warrant or probable cause. A diehard Donald Trump supporter, Ton-That envisioned using facial recognition to compare images of migrants crossing the border to mugshots to see if the arrivals had been previously arrested in the United States. His Border Patrol pitch also included a proposal to screen any arrival for “sentiment about the USA.” Here, Ton-That appeared to conflate support for the Republican leader with American identity, proposing to scan migrants’ social media for “posts saying ‘I hate Trump’ or ‘Trump is a puta’” and targeting anyone with an “affinity for far-left groups.” The lone example he offered was the National Council of La Raza, now called UnidosUS, one of the country’s largest Hispanic civil rights organizations. (…) No federal laws regulate facial recognition, and many federal agencies have deployed Clearview for years with little accountability. Consider that the FBI—now run by Kash Patel, who has claimed FBI agents incited January 6, pledged to target journalists, and penned a book containing the names of officials he planned to settle scores with—is another major federal customer. Patel’s new deputy director, Dan Bongino, is a conspiratorial right-wing influencer who has used violent rhetoric about liberals and called for jailing Democrats. (The FBI declined to comment on its use of Clearview or on Bongino’s extremist views.)

The False Prophet of Government Efficiency

When a CEO’s companies face multiple federal investigations, recall millions of products and lose billions in market value, we typically don’t herald them as paragons of efficiency. Yet somehow, Elon Musk has been anointed as the architect of federal government reform, a position that would be laughable if it weren’t so dangerous. The numbers tell the story. Tesla’s recent recall of nearly two million vehicles; SpaceX’s string of launch failures; Twitter’s (now X) catastrophic 80% devaluation after Musk’s acquisition, decimating what was once the world’s most accessible public forum. These aren’t the credentials of an efficiency expert, but rather the resume of a chaos agent. So why entrust government reform to someone who has demonstrated such spectacular failures in managing his own enterprises — enterprises that, ironically, have been propped up by billions in federal contracts and subsidies? SpaceX alone has received hundreds of billions in NASA, Space Development Agency and National Reconnaissance Office contracts, while Tesla has benefited from generous government incentives and tax credits. This supposed crusader against government inefficiency has built his fortune on taxpayer dollars, making his appointment as efficiency czar not just ill-advised but riddled with conflicts of interest. Add in a recent unsolicited $97.4B offer to buy OpenAI and it appears he’s not only trying to corner a market, but the state, as well. The answer to why he’s been chosen is simple: This was never about efficiency. It’s about control and specifically about helping Donald Trump not just reascend to the presidency, but to help him claim his place as the most powerful president in American history. (…) True efficiency requires accountability, yet accountability is conspicuously absent from this equation. Musk’s track record shows a pattern of evading responsibility while charging forward with disruptive changes and disregard for consequences. The federal government, which serves 335 million Americans, cannot afford such reckless experimentation. The irony is palpable. The same voices that rail against government overreach now advocate for concentrating unprecedented power in the hands of unelected tech billionaires — or as Dartmouth sociologist Brooke Harrington calls it, “broligarchy.” The same critics who demand government accountability now champion a figure whose own corporate governance has raised serious concerns among shareholders and regulators alike.

Der somalische Flüchtling Ahmed Mohamed Odowaa half bei der Festnahme des Täters in Aschaffenburg. Erst loben CSUler das, jetzt wirft Bayern ihn raus. Was Ahmed Mohamed Odowaa am 22. Januar in Aschaffenburg tat, kann gar nicht genug gewürdigt werden. Daran ließ Sandro Kirchner, Staatssekretär im bayerischen Innenministerium, keinen Zweifel. „In dieser – einer der dunkelsten Stunden Bayerns – waren Sie durch Ihr beherztes Handeln und Ihre Hilfsbereitschaft ein leuchtendes Beispiel für den Zusammenhalt in unserer Gemeinschaft“, schrieb der CSU-Politiker dem 30-jährigen Odowaa einen Monat später. Mit „größter Dankbarkeit und tiefem Respekt“ wende er sich an Odowaa, so Kirchner. Odowaa kommt aus Somalia, das seit vielen Jahren unter Gewalt, Islamismus und Hunger leidet. Der Flüchtling war einer der Ersten, die am Tatort waren, als an dem Wintertag im Aschaffenburger Park Schöntal ein 28-Jähriger einen Anschlag auf eine Kindergartengruppe verübte. Der offenbar psychisch gestörte Afghane war mit einem Messer auf die Gruppe losgegangen. Dabei tötete er einen zweijährigen Jungen aus Marokko und einen 41-jährigen Deutschen, der sich ihm in den Weg stellte. Ein weiteres Kind und zwei Erwachsene wurden bei dem Anschlag verletzt. Gemeinsam mit einem anderen Mann verfolgte Odowaa den Fliehenden. Während der andere die Polizei per Handy lotste, blieb Odowaa dem Täter auf den Fersen. An einer nahegelegenen Bahnstrecke schließlich konnte die Polizei diesen auf den Gleisen festnehmen. (…) Der Somalier war laut Main-Echo im Januar 2024 aus Italien nach Deutschland gekommen. Hier ist er lediglich geduldet und in einer Flüchtlingsunterkunft im Landkreis Aschaffenburg untergebracht. Vor ein paar Tagen habe Odowaa mitgeteilt bekommen, dass er bis zum 8. Juli nach Italien ausreisen müsse. Andernfalls drohe ihm gemäß der Dublin-II-Verordnung die Abschiebung dorthin. Auf einen schriftlichen Bescheid wartet Odowaa noch. Im Netz wird gegen die mögliche Abschiebung mobilisiert. Auf change.org wurde am Samstag eine Petition gestartet, die einen Stopp der Abschiebung forderte und schon bis Sonntagmittag von mehr als 10.000 Menschen unterschrieben wurde. „Nicht zu fassen“, schrieb dort ein Unterzeichner. „Der Asylantrag sollte sofort umgewandelt werden und eine Einbürgerung erfolgen, wenigstens aber ein dauerhaftes Bleiberecht. So sollte ein Land mit seinen Helden umgehen, ganz egal, woher sie kommen. Das Dankesschreiben von Söder ist ansonsten das Papier nicht wert, auf dem es steht.“
