Blocking white supremacist site should be priority: expert

Intelligence agencies in New Zealand are being urged to do a better job at blocking a website commonly used by white supremacists. It comes as a warning from intelligence expert Paul Buchanan who says a ban on the website 4chan is not foolproof, after a threat aimed at two Christchurch mosques was posted on the site this week. A 27-year-old man was arrested on Thursday and appeared in court on Friday charged with threatening to kill worshippers at Linwood Islamic Centre and Al Noor Mosque in Christchurch. Police said he made the threats on 4chan, a website frequently used by extremists and white supremacists. Local internet service providers banned 4chan and the related 8chan, following the terror attacks on March 15 in 2019. But Buchanan said there are still problems. “The bans instituted by the internet providers here in New Zealand is not sufficient when it comes to extremists communicating with each other.”

DONALD #TRUMP’S #GAB ACCOUNT USES AN EMAIL ADDRESS BELONGING TO THE EXTREMIST PLATFORM’S CEO

When I got my hands on the Gab data, the first thing I did was look up Trump’s account. GAB, THE FAR-RIGHT social network that’s known as a safe space for hate speech, QAnon believers, Trump election fraud conspiracists, and white supremacist terrorists, was hacked pretty badly. The site exploded in popularity after the January 6 insurrection when Amazon kicked Parler, another social network used by right-wing extremists, offline, which caused Gab’s user base to explode from about 1 million users to roughly 4 million. The hacker made off with the email addresses and encrypted passwords of all 4 million of the site’s users and the content of more than 39 million posts, including everything posted to 7,632 private groups, and leaked them to the radical transparency group Distributed Denial of Secrets. On Monday, DDoSecrets released the nearly 70 gigabytes of hacked data to journalists and researchers. Gab’s CEO Andrew Torba has falsely accused DDoSecrets of hacking Gab — a source provided DDoSecrets with the data, they didn’t hack it themselves — and then used an anti-trans slur when posting about the group. Former President Donald Trump’s verified Gab account was among those that were compromised (though the account’s description says it’s “reserved” for Trump, and Torba has stated that Trump himself doesn’t use it). When I got my hands on the Gab data, the first thing I did was look up Trump’s account, and the first thing I noticed was the email address associated with it: [email protected]. Why was Trump using this obscure email address, and what is Kuhcoon? It turns out that Torba, the current CEO of Gab, is the former CEO and founder of Kuhcoon (later renamed Automate Ads, and acquired by AdHawk in 2017), a tech startup that offered automated Facebook ad campaigns. According to a 2015 interview, Torba started Kuhcoon in 2011 with his college roommate. The company received venture capital backing from Y Combinator in 2014; in August 2016, Torba stepped down as CEO, and he, along with his co-worker Ekrem Büyükkaya, founded Gab.

PROJECT OPUS – Erik Prince and the Failed Plot to Arm a CIA Asset-Turned-Warlord in Libya

IN 2019, Erik Prince, the founder of the notorious mercenary firm Blackwater and a prominent Donald Trump supporter, aided a plot to move U.S.-made attack helicopters, weapons, and other military equipment from Jordan to a renegade commander fighting for control of war-torn Libya. A team of mercenaries planned to use the aircraft to help the commander, Khalifa Hifter, a U.S. citizen and former CIA asset, defeat Libya’s U.N.-recognized and U.S.-backed government. While the U.N. has alleged that Prince helped facilitate the mercenary effort, sources with knowledge of the chain of events, as well as documents obtained by The Intercept, reveal new details about the scheme as well as Prince’s yearslong campaign to support Hifter in his bid to take power in Libya. The mission to back Hifter ultimately failed, but a confidential U.N. report issued last week and first reported by the New York Times concluded that Prince, a former Navy SEAL, and his associates violated the U.N. arms embargo for Libya. For more than a year, The Intercept has been investigating the failed mercenary effort, dubbed Project Opus. This account is based on dozens of interviews, including with people involved in the ill-fated mission, as well as the U.N. report and other documents obtained exclusively by The Intercept. It includes a blow-by-blow account of how Prince and an associate sought to pressure the Jordanian government to aid the illicit mission, as well as previously unreported details about how the architects of Project Opus used Prince’s connections to the Trump administration to try to win support for their efforts in Libya. The Intercept’s reporting shows that the push to aid Hifter continued even after Project Opus fell apart. In the summer of 2019, after their backdoor efforts failed to convince Jordan to approve the arms transfer, Prince called a member of Trump’s National Security Council to request a meeting; Prince asked the official to meet with Christiaan Durrant, Prince’s business associate and former employee. At the Army and Navy Club near the White House, with Prince sitting silently at his side, Durrant described the campaign to back Hifter and asked for U.S. support for their mercenary effort, the former NSC official told The Intercept. The upside, Durrant told the official, was that the U.S. help would limit Hifter’s reliance on the Russians, who were also supporting him in the war. The official, who asked not to be named because he feared professional reprisals for being publicly associated with Prince, balked. “It wasn’t something I wanted to be involved in,” he said.

Independent UN sanctions monitors accused Prince of proposing a private military operation – known as ‘Project Opus’ – to Libya’s eastern-based commander Khalifa Haftar. Erik Prince, the private security executive and supporter of former U.S. President Donald Trump, “at the very least” helped evade an arms embargo on Libya, according to excerpts from a United Nations report seen by Reuters. Independent UN sanctions monitors accused Prince of proposing a private military operation – known as ‘Project Opus’ – to Libya’s eastern-based commander Khalifa Haftar in April 2019 and helping procure three aircraft for it. (…) The UN monitors wrote in the report that they had “identified that Erik Prince made a proposal for the operation to Khalifa Haftar in Cairo, Egypt on, or about, 14 April 2019.” Haftar was in Cairo at the time to meet Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. “Mr. Prince was not in Egypt at any point in 2019 – as travel records confirm – and has never met or spoken to Mr. Haftar. This alleged meeting is fiction and never took place,” Schwartz said. The report described Prince’s proposal as “a well-funded private military company operation” designed to provide Haftar with armed assault helicopters, intelligence surveillance aircraft, maritime interdiction, drones, and cyber, intelligence and targeting capabilities; Trump-Unterstützer soll Hintermann von Söldner-Mission in Libyen sein.

How extreme right-wing groups have ‘weaponised the internet’ in Australia

The alleged attack by a neo-Nazi on a Channel 9 security guard has highlighted a rising threat in Australia as extreme far-right groups spread hate. The brazen and unprovoked alleged attack on a Channel 9 security guard this week has highlighted the “dangerous” and alarming rise of the far-right movement across Australia. The speed at which neo-Nazi leader Thomas Sewell allegedly escalated to violence sent shivers down the spine of civil rights activists who have been monitoring the behaviour of these individuals over recent years. Far-right groups – spurred on by the dream of an “Australian Hitler” – have dramatically increased their activities on Australian soil in recent years as new cells pop up. The Grampians, the National Museum in Canberra, the Story Bridge in Brisbane, Swinburne University and the Brisbane Synagogue are some of the places where these groups have congregated to spread their message of hate, white supremacist and neo-Nazi ideology. A relatively new group to Australia – the National Socialist Network – claims to have an active footprint in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra, Perth and a number of regional cities.

#FBI informant testifies against men accused of #Whitmer #kidnapping plot – #terror

The man who was a secret informant for the FBI in its efforts to take down a group accused of planning to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer testified in court against three of the suspects. The informant only went by “Dan” in the Friday preliminary hearings for Pete Musico, 43; Joseph Morrison, 26; and Paul Bellar, 22, according to the Detroit Free Press. The three men were among a group of 14 who have been accused of targeting the Michigan governor over her restrictions that were put in place to stop the spread of the coronavirus. ONE OF SIX CHARGES IN PLOT TO KIDNAP GOV. GRETCHEN WHITMER PLEADS GUILTY Dan learned of the group, the Wolverine Watchmen, through Facebook, and it was suggested to him through the platform’s algorithm, he said. (…) Dan approached a friend in law enforcement once he found out that the group was interested in harming police officers. The FBI then approached him, and he agreed to cooperate as an informant. His time undercover included going to protest at the state Capitol and to a rural training area with members of the group.
