Air Force finally boots prominent white supremacist after months of review

A white supremacist serving in the Air Force has finally been kicked out of the service after months of review, an Air Force spokesperson said last week. Shawn Michael McCaffrey, formerly Airman 1st Class McCaffrey, has a history of promoting white supremacist, anti-Semitic, racist and homophobic beliefs on social media. In fact, a Google search could have detected his hateful opinions, but the Air Force appeared to have missed that when McCaffrey enlisted six months ago on Jan. 26. “Shawn McCaffrey is no longer serving in the U.S. Air Force,” service spokesperson Ann Stefanek told Task & Purpose on Monday. HuffPost first reported the news last week. “Information brought to the attention of his command after Mr. McCaffrey’s enlistment led to an entry-level separation due to erroneous enlistment,” she added. The statement comes three months after McCaffrey’s presence in the military’s premier airpower branch was first reported in April. As the months passed and McCaffrey was still in uniform, he drew the ire of Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.), the chair of the House Armed Services Military Personnel Subcommittee. “I will be contacting Air Force leadership to find out why this individual – who has his own author page on a website for far-right extremists, describes himself as an ‘activist,’ and co-hosted a weekly podcast in which he attacked Jews, women, LGBTQ+ people, the U.S. armed forces, and many others using unacceptable slurs – remains on active duty and under review given the very public and abundant evidence of his extremist ties,” the congresswoman told Task & Purpose in June.
At the time, Stefanek said that the Air Force was “not aware of the allegations during the enlistment process,” she said. “No further information or details of this allegation can be released until the facts involving this allegation are fully reviewed.” The Department of Defense’s definition of extremism is in flux as the military attempts to bolster its efforts to root out extremists in the ranks. Still, DoD regulations forbid service members from participating in “organizations that advocate supremacist, extremist or criminal gang doctrine, ideology or causes,” such as those that discriminate based on race, creed, color, sex, religion ethnicity or national origin, or advocate the use of force, violence or criminal activity to deprive individuals of their civil rights.

In December 2017, McCaffrey used the name “DJ FASH” on Twitter. “Fash” is a slang term for “fascist.” In May 2020, McCaffrey used the name “Twitter Refugee” on Instagram.

Big Tech #database to target ‘extremist content’ from ‘white supremacists’ and ‘far right #militias’: Report – #terror

GIFCT was formed in 2017 in light of the terror attacks in 2017. Its database contains digital imprints of posts mostly from groups on a UN Security Council Sanctions’ list. The Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT) will expand its database to target ‘extremist content’ shared by ‘white supremacists’ and ‘far-right militias’, Reuters has reported. Until now, the database has limited its focus on content by terrorist groups on a United Nations’ list but it will now expand operations. The GIFCT will use lists from intelligence sharing groups such as Five Eyes to add URLs and PDFs from Proud Boys, the Three Percenters and other ‘white supremacist’ and ‘militia’ groups. “Anyone looking at the terrorism or extremism landscape has to appreciate that there are other parts…that are demanding attention right now,” GIFCT’s Executive Director Nicholas Rasmussen told Reuters.
Fourteen groups can access the database including Reddit, Snapchat-owner Snap, Facebook-owned Instagram, Verizon Media, Microsoft’s LinkedIn and Dropbox. GIFCT was formed in 2017 in light of the terror attacks in 2017. Its database contains digital imprints of posts mostly from groups on a UN Security Council Sanctions’ list. However, there have been concerns of censorship and violation of free speech rights. “Over-achievement in this takes you in the direction of violating someone’s rights on the internet to engage in free expression,” Rasmussen said. The group was founded by Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter and YouTube.

Over the next few months, the group will add attacker manifestos – often shared by sympathizers after white supremacist violence – and other publications and links flagged by U.N. initiative Tech Against Terrorism. It will use lists from intelligence-sharing group Five Eyes, adding URLs and PDFs from more groups, including the Proud Boys, the Three Percenters and neo-Nazis. The firms, which include Twitter and Alphabet Inc’s YouTube, share “hashes,” unique numerical representations of original pieces of content that have been removed from their services. Die Berliner Polizei ermittelt in den eigenen Reihen wegen des Verdachts rassistischer und menschenverachtender Äußerungen. Beschäftigte hätten insgesamt fünf Kollegen desselben Dienstbereichs angezeigt, teilte die Polizei am Montag mit. Die von der Polizei für solche Fälle extra eingerichtete Gruppe Zentral führe die Ermittlungen. Auch in Freiburg ging die Polizei wegen eines ähnlichen Verdachts gegen mehrere Beamte vor. Äußerungen, die von zwei Polizisten während Streifenfahrten im Mai gemacht worden sein sollen, konnten laut Mitteilung nicht von Außenstehenden oder den Betroffenen, auf die sie ausgerichtet waren, wahrgenommen werden, hieß es. Dies sei zwar bei der strafrechtlichen Bewertung relevant, ändere jedoch nichts daran, dass sie in absolutem Widerspruch zum Werte- und Selbstverständnis sowie den Aufgaben und Pflichten von Polizistinnen und Polizisten stehen, hieß es. (…) Die Freiburger Polizei beschlagnahmte nach Hinweisen auf Chat-Nachrichten mit rassistischen Inhalten die Smartphones dreier Beamten. Gegen die Polizisten seien zudem Disziplinarverfahren eingeleitet worden, teilte das Präsidium am Montag mit. Der Hinweis auf „vereinzelt fremdenfeindliche und diskriminierende Inhalte“ einer Chat-Gruppe in den Jahren 2017 und 2018 kam demnach aus den eigenen Reihen.

Bei der Staatsanwaltschaft Heidelberg sind mehrere Strafanzeigen gegen den Sinsheimer “Querdenken-Arzt” Bodo Schiffmann eingegangen. Die Anzeigen beziehen sich auf eine Spendensammlung für Hochwasser-Opfer. Bei der Staatsanwaltschaft Heidelberg seien mehrere Mails mit Anzeigen eingegangen. Das hat ein Sprecher der Staatsanwaltschaft dem SWR bestätigt. Man habe einen Überprüfungsvorgang eingeleitet, so der Sprecher. Aus den Strafanzeigen lasse sich zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt aber keine konkrete Straftat ableiten. Die Anzeigen aus der Bevölkerung beziehen sich auf gespendete Gelder, die angeblich veruntreut werden könnten.

Impfgegner : Grenze überschritten

Erstmals geht die Justiz gegen jemanden vor, der die Corona-Politik mit den Verbrechen des Nationalsozialismus vergleicht. Er soll nun in Bayern wegen Volksverhetzung belangt werden. Nazivergleiche haben Konjunktur. Aber derzeit sind es nicht wütende Griechen, die Angela Merkel mit Hitlerbärtchen als Diktatorin zeichnen, wie während der Schuldenkrise vor zehn Jahren. Es sind deutsche Rechtsextreme – Menschen, die dem antisemitischen Denken der Nazis selbst nicht so fern stehen. Da werden Corona-Masken mit gelbem Judenstern und dem Wort “Ungeimpft” bedruckt, als sei die heutige Corona-Politik mit der Judenverfolgung durch das NS-Regime vergleichbar. Da werden Fotomontagen des Tors zum Konzentrationslager Auschwitz mit der Aufschrift “Impfen macht frei” verbreitet, als planten Merkel und Jens Spahn einen Völkermord. Der Fall eines Münchners könnte zum Musterprozess werden. Bislang hat die Justiz wenig dagegen getan. Jetzt unternimmt die Generalstaatsanwaltschaft München einen beachtlichen Schritt. Am Freitag haben Beamte bei einem 45 Jahre alten Münchner geklingelt und seine Wohnung durchsucht. Smartphones und Computer nahmen sie mit. Dem Mann wurde der Vorwurf der Volksverhetzung eröffnet. Auf seiner Facebook-Seite hatte er ein zweigeteiltes Bild gepostet, auf dessen unterer Hälfte der Eingang des Konzentrationslagers Auschwitz mit den Worten “Arbeit macht frei” zu sehen war. Darüber eine Zeichnung mit “Impfen macht frei”, sowie eine Reihe von schwarz Uniformierten mit riesigen Spritzen in der Hand. “Alles schon mal dagewesen”, stand daneben.
Freiheitsstrafe von bis zu fünf Jahren oder Geldstrafe – das soll nun die Folge sein für diesen Post, der binnen weniger Tage 52-mal gelikt und 26-mal kommentiert wurde, die Generalstaatsanwaltschaft hat da genau mitgezählt. Es sei unsäglich, sagt ihr Antisemitismusbeauftragter Andreas Franck: “Das verharmlost die mörderische Judenverfolgung in der Nazi-Zeit.” Es sei eine “Gleichsetzung” mit der aktuellen Corona-Politik. Er will diesen Fall zum Musterprozess machen. Das Internet sei derzeit voll von solchen Vergleichen, vor allem in der Querdenker-Bewegung seien sie gängig. “Aber der Volksverhetzungsparagraf wird bislang kaum angewendet.

A mysterious marketing agency secretly offered to pay social media stars to spread disinformation about Covid-19 vaccines. Their plan failed when the influencers went public about the attempt to recruit them. “It started with an email” says Mirko Drotschmann, a German YouTuber and journalist. Mirko normally ignores offers from brands asking him to advertise their products to his more than 1.5 million subscribers. But the sponsorship offer he received in May this year was unlike any other. An influencer marketing agency called Fazze offered to pay him to promote what it said was leaked information that suggested the death rate among people who had the Pfizer vaccine was almost three times that of the AstraZeneca jab. The information provided wasn’t true. It quickly became apparent to Mirko that he was being asked to spread disinformation to undermine public confidence in vaccines in the middle of a pandemic.
“I was shocked,” says Mirko “then I was curious, what’s behind all that?” In France, science YouTuber Léo Grasset received a similar offer. The agency offered him 2000 euros if he would take part. Fazze said it was acting for a client who wished to remain anonymous. “That’s a huge red flag” says Léo. Both Léo and Mirko were appalled by the false claims. They pretended to be interested in order to try to find out more and were provided with detailed instructions about what they should say in their videos. In stilted English, the brief instructed them to “Act like you have the passion and interest in this topic.” It told them not to mention the video had a sponsor – and instead pretend they were spontaneously giving advice out of concern for their viewers. Social media platforms have rules that ban not disclosing that content is sponsored. In France and Germany it’s also illegal. Fazze’s brief told influencers to share a story in French newspaper Le Monde about a data leak from the European Medicines Agency. (…) The influencers were also provided with a list of links to share – dubious articles which all used the same set of figures that supposedly showed the Pfzer vaccine was dangerous. When Léo and Mirko exposed the Fazze campaign on Twitter all the articles, except the Le Monde story, disappeared from the web.

Deutscher Bundesgerichtshof: Löschen von Hassreden durch Facebook wohl rechtens

Richter: Facebook darf Hassreden löschen, auch wenn keine Straftat vorliegt. Die Löschung sogenannter Hassreden durch Facebook ist nach erster Einschätzung des deutschen Bundesgerichtshof (BGH) rechtmäßig. “Nach vorläufiger Auffassung des Senats hat Facebook das Recht auf Löschung auch dann, wenn keine Straftat vorliegt”, sagte der Vorsitzende Richter, Ulrich Herrmann, am Donnerstag. Der BGH verhandelte erstmals über einen entsprechenden Fall. Seit April 2018 verbietet das soziale Netzwerk Hassreden, löscht sie und verhängt auch Kontosperren bei entsprechenden Kommentaren. Im konkreten Fall klagen zwei Nutzer gegen Facebook, deren als rassistisch eingestuften Kommentare gegen Migranten gelöscht worden waren. Zusätzlich wurden ihre Konten für drei beziehungsweise dreißig Tage gesperrt. Der III. Zivilsenat will das Urteil in den kommenden Wochen verkünden. (AZ: III ZR 179/20 und III ZR 192/20)
