Elon Musk has a pretty tried-and-true playbook for doing business — he’s used it for years to build companies from Tesla to SpaceX. Unfortunately for him, it is not a model that can turn Twitter into a profitable company. It’s one that will take the social-media company down in flames. Here’s the Musk playbook: Enter a field with very little competition. Claim that your new company will solve a massive, global problem or achieve a seemingly impossible goal. Raise money from a fervent group of true believers and keep them on the hook with flashy, half-baked product ideas. Suck up billions from the government. Underpay, undervalue, and overwork your employees. Repeat.
Twitter is the antithesis of an “Elon Musk company.” It’s an influential but small player in a field that is dominated by giant, well-funded competitors. The government is more likely to put the clamps on Twitter than give it some windfall contract. And Twitter’s employees have options: They can leave and work for companies that treat them much better than Musk ever would. But perhaps most importantly, a lot of people think Twitter — and Musk’s ownership of the company — is part of a global media problem, rather than some grand solution. And without a big, world-changing promise to paper over his sophomoric product ideas and erratic management, Musk’s Twitter takeover is doomed. (…) This chaotic management stands in contrast to the goals that Musk claims his companies are capable of achieving. Right now, Musk is making big promises about what the future of Twitter will look like to entice people to the platform: amazing video tools, 4,000-character-count tweets, a suite of premium features, an end to annoying bots. These sort of product teases are also standard for any Musk-led Tesla presentation. In 2019, he promised that the company would have “over 1 million robo-taxis on the road” by the next year. So far, Tesla has none. More than two years after taking initial orders, the faithful are still waiting for their Cybertrucks. Even products that do materialize, like Tesla’s Model 3, arrive years later than promised. And as it was being built, employees complained to me that Tesla’s lack of planning and testing in building the Model 3 line led to sloppiness and defects down the road.

Other users on the site called for more violence. The hate isn’t limited to fringe sites. On Twitter, YouTube and Facebook, researchers and LGBTQ advocates have tracked an increase in hate speech and threats of violence directed at LGBTQ people, groups and events, with much of it directed at transgender people. The content comes after conservative lawmakers in several states introduced dozens of anti-LGBTQ measures and amid a wave of threats targeting LGBTQ groups, as well as hospitals, health care workers, libraries and private businesses that support them. “I don’t think people understand the state of danger that we’re living in right now,” said Jay Brown, senior vice president at the Human Rights Campaign and a transgender man. “A lot of that is happening online, and online threats are turning into threats of real violence offline.” Hospitals in Boston, Pittsburgh, Phoenix, Washington, D.C., and other cities have received bomb threats and other harassing messages after misleading claims spread online about transgender care programs. In Tennessee, masked members of a white supremacist group showed up recently at a holiday charity event at a bookstore because the evening’s entertainment included a drag performer. An upcoming holiday party at an adults-only gay nightclub scheduled for Friday was also the subject of threats. The party’s theme? Ugly Christmas sweaters.

DOJ: Savage man charged with gun crimes praised mass shooters, sought to join Nazi groups – #terror #TheBase

A Savage man who allegedly praised mass shootings and sought to join neo-Nazi terrorist groups has been charged with illegally possessing a variety of weapons, and trying to obtain machine guns and hand grenades. That’s according to the Department of Justice, which says River William Smith, 20, of Savage, also made claims he was preparing for a “violent exchange with police.” Smith, who has been charged with federal weapons crimes, allegedly sympathized with the Parkland High School shooter in Florida and showed “admiration” for the recent shooting at a Colorado Springs LGBTQ nightclub, in which five people died, calling the shooter “a hero.” A concerned citizen reported Smith’s behavior to the FBI as “disturbing,” saying that Smith would show up to a gun range wearing “heavy-duty body armor” and would practice rapid reloads of his weapons “excessively.” Federal court files state Smith would fire “300 rounds in 20 minutes.” Another tip made in September at a Prior Lake gun club noted that Smith’s attire of tactical black gear and body armor was “very unusual for the gun club.” According to an investigation by the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, it was learned Smith had access to a variety of weapons that were bought for him by his grandmother, as he’s not of age to do so. The weaponry included: Fully automatic rifles Handguns Shotgun Suppressors Body armor Kevlar helmet Ammunition “Smith stated he was preparing to fight the police and was dedicated to dying in that fight,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. Charges state that in 2019, when Smith was 17, he was involved in an incident in which he fired three rounds from an AK-47-style assault rifle inside a home. One of the shots went through a door and struck his grandmother, injuring her. According to Minnesota law, a person must be 21 years of age or older to legally purchase handgun ammunition. Smith possessed two handguns and an AR-style rifle made by gun manufacturer Daniel Defense, the maker of weapons involved in the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting and most recently the Uvalde Elementary School mass shooting in Texas. A search warrant found internet searches by Smith about “Adolf Hitler, the Nazi SS, and videos of homosexuals being killed.” Authorities also found computer files related to building a bomb and manufacturing homemade firearms and graphics that showed how to create a fully automatic firearm. In text messages, Smith allegedly shared “an intense dislike of minorities, Jewish individuals, and homosexuals,” according to the complaint. He also made several threats towards police, noting: “If they tried to take my guns I would open fire.” Smith told an informant he had considered joining a neo-Nazi terrorist group called “The Base.”
