Sarah Silverman is suing OpenAI and Meta for copyright infringement

The lawsuits allege the companies trained their AI models on books without permission. Comedian and author Sarah Silverman, seen here participating in a Tax Day protest in 2017. Photo by Stephanie Keith/Getty Images Comedian and author Sarah Silverman, as well as authors Christopher Golden and Richard Kadrey — are suing OpenAI and Meta each in a US District Court over dual claims of copyright infringement. The suits alleges, among other things, that OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Meta’s LLaMA were trained on illegally-acquired datasets containing their works, which they say were acquired from “shadow library” websites like Bibliotik, Library Genesis, Z-Library, and others, noting the books are “available in bulk via torrent systems.” Golden and Kadrey each declined to comment on the lawsuit, while Silverman’s team did not respond by press time. In the OpenAI suit, the trio offers exhibits showing that when prompted, ChatGPT will summarize their books, infringing on their copyrights. Silverman’s Bedwetter is the first book shown being summarized by ChatGPT in the exhibits, while Golden’s book Ararat is also used as an example, as is Kadrey’s book Sandman Slim. The claim says the chatbot never bothered to “reproduce any of the copyright management information Plaintiffs included with their published works.” As for the separate lawsuit against Meta, it alleges the authors’ books were accessible in datasets Meta used to train its LLaMA models, a quartet of open-source AI Models the company introduced in February.

Far-right figures, including Nazi supporters, anti-gay extremists, and white supremacists, are flocking to Threads

Right-wing figures and extremists are testing Meta’s content moderation policies and posting slurs and other forms of hate speech on Meta’s Twitter alternative. After Meta’s new app Threads went live, right-wing and fringe figures signed up for the new Twitter alternative and began posting slurs and other forms of hate speech on their accounts in an attempt to challenge Meta’s content moderation practices.  On July 5, Meta released Threads, a companion app to Instagram, as a “Twitter Killer” to seemingly capture users dissatisfied with the chaos that has plagued Twitter since Elon Musk’s takeover. As Threads is currently anchored to Instagram, users must comply with Instagram’s Community Guidelines, as well as additional related policies from Meta.  In the last year, Meta, along with other major social media platforms, has noticeably deprioritized its content moderation and user safety practices. Instagram specifically has a long history of allowing hate speech and misinformation to prosper on the app, including permitting virulently anti-LGBTQ accounts, far-right extremists, and right-wing advertisers to post false and harmful rhetoric.  Instagram has also failed to adequately moderate many aspects of its platform, with users easily sidestepping moderation with story features, the “link-in-bio loophole,” commerce functions, and comments sections. Right-wing figure ALX said Threads is an “Instagram comments section” — and right-wing users are already treating it in a similar way. Several accounts on Threads, including that of virulent antisemite Andrew Torba and others seemingly affiliated with the Groyper movement (led by white nationalist Nick Fuentes), have already employed the practice of replying letters to one another’s comments in order to spell out a slur together.  Within 24 hours of Threads’ release, right-wing and fringe figures signed up for the platform, including white nationalist Richard Spencer and Nazi supporters. Fuentes, who claims to have been banned from Meta’s platforms, announced in a livestream on July 6, “I signed up for it last night. I made a fake Instagram. I got on a fake Thread.” He went on to instruct his followers to “try and build a big account. I mean, if you get in early, maybe some of you guys can blow up and red pill some people on there.”

Neo-Nazi podcasters who said Prince Harry and Meghan’s son Archie is an ‘abomination that should be put down’ for being mixed race are convicted of #terror crimes

Christopher Gibbons, 38, and Tyrone Patten-Walsh, 34, launched racist tirades They denied eight counts of encouraging acts of terrorism but were found guilty. Two neo-Nazi podcasters who incited violence against minorities – including targeting Harry and Meghan’s son Archie – have been found guilty of terror crimes. Christopher Gibbons, 38, and Tyrone Patten-Walsh, 34, hosted Black Wolf Radio, where they launched homophobic, racist, anti-Semitic, Islamophobic and misogynistic tirades. In one broadcast the pair called Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s four-year-old son an ‘abomination that should be put down’. Both men were arrested in May 2021, and were charged three months later. They denied eight counts of encouraging acts of terrorism – each charge relating to a different podcast episode. (…) Gibbons and Patten-Walsh also endorsed the murder of Labour MP Jo Cox in 2016, who was murdered by a white supremacist in her constituency of Batley, West Yorkshire. They also glorified Brenton Tarrant, who went on a shooting spree in 2019 when he killed 51 people at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. Police investigating their podcast said they even ‘encouraged listeners to go out and commit acts of terrorist violence’. The investigation found that Gibbons had also created an Internet library containing hundreds of extreme right-wing texts and other materials.

Right-wing MP’s launch online smear campaign against Iltalehti journalist Ida Erämaa

On 2 July 2023, ruling right-wing Finns Party (PS) members of the Finnish Parliament Wille Rydman, Sebastian Tynkkynen and Onni Rostila launched an online smear campaign on Twitter against Iltalehti journalist Ida Erämaa due to her recent critical reporting on the racist, far-right rhetoric and neo-Nazi affiliations of PS MPs and ministers. Also ruling National Coalition Party (KOK) MP Tere Sammallahti participated in the harassment campaign. Social media users targeted Erämaa with discrediting, insulting comments based on the journalist’s age, gender, appearance and alleged political leanings. The comments included sexual harassment, as well as threats of physical and sexual violence. The MPs targeted Erämaa due to her column published on 2 July, in which she, among other things, criticized PS for trying to prevent the media from bringing out the “extreme right-wing connections” of their MPs. Erämaa has also been discussing the recent neo-Nazi scandal of Minister of Economic Affairs Vilhelm Junnila, which lead to him resigning, on her personal TikTok profile. Tynkkynen published the following tweet on his Twitter account, which has over 40 thousand followers: “I was surprised when Iltalehti started to push out manic and completely biased stories about Finns Party and the right-wing government. Behind political journalism was the same new name: Ida Erämaa. I went through her TikTok and it turned out that it’s an intersectional green bastard of the worst kind, who is also a lifestyle makeup influencer. She is now writing Iltalehti’s political articles for the people to internalize. I won’t be giving interviews to that activist. Welcome to politics on the same line to try to get through the elections. Journalism, on the other hand, is transmission of information and it is believable as long as it is not used as a cover to advance one’s own agenda. Yes, and one more thing: the writing of the lady in question should not be criticized or journalism is threatened. Yeah, right.” After public backlash, Tynkkynen published the following tweet on 3 July: “We don’t want Kekkonen’s time, even though such a narrative is desperately trying to be built. None of the ministers have a Nazi background, even if they try to claim that. The journalist behind this is Ida Erämaa, and criticism of her bias has got the media on their toes. You in the media use the power of opinion and sometimes crucify people to the wall for no reason. Yes, we will continue to criticize the media if necessary, and we do not have any new gear on. Instead, the media seems to have a completely new gear on, even though the same worn-out faces committed to parliamentarism are now the subject of news from ministerial roles. Now we paint devils where they really don’t exist and Nazism and racism as concepts plunge into even stronger inflation. Just put on a good cry about media criticism, but it’s such a thing that when journalism is always right, it’s located in Russia. Long live free discussion and criticism – also towards the activities of the media.”
