Southport stabbings latest: #EDL believed to be behind ‘sickening’ violence after false speculation over suspect – as three victims named

Police have condemned “sickening” violence that has erupted outside a mosque in Southport, believed to have been instigated by supporters of the far right group English Defence League. It comes after three children killed in yesterday’s knife attack were named. Merseyside Police has released a statement on the violence that has erupted outside a mosque in Southport.  The force says a large group of people, believed to be supporters of the English Defence League, began to throw items towards a mosque on St Luke’s Road.  One officer has suffered a suspected broken nose and police vehicles have been set alight. Bottles and wheelie bins have also been thrown at officers responding to the incident.  The violence appears to be linked to several false accusations spread online, with incorrect names of the 17-year-old boy that has been arrested shared on social media.

Die Angreifer hätten nach einer Mahnwache für die Opfer der Messerattacke sowohl Beamte als auch die örtliche Moschee mit Ziegelsteinen beworfen und ein Geschäft geplündert, so die Polizei. Ausserdem setzten sie den Angaben zufolge Autos und Mülltonnen in Brand. (…) Hintergrund der Ausschreitungen sind nach Polizeiangaben Falschmeldungen und Gerüchte über die Herkunft des mutmasslichen Täters. «Wir haben bereits mitgeteilt, dass die Person in Grossbritannien geboren wurde, und Spekulationen helfen im Moment niemandem», betonte die Behörde. Der tatverdächtige Jugendliche lebt seit mehr als zehn Jahren in der Gegend. Er wurde als Sohn von Ruandern in der walisischen Hauptstadt Cardiff geboren. Die Merseyside Police teilte weiter mit, bei den Randalierern handele es sich vorrangig um Mitglieder einer rechtsextremen Gruppe. Sie stammten nicht aus der Gegend und seien auch nicht in Sorge um die Betroffenen und die Anwohner.

„Wir werden dich hängen“ – Habeck stellt 700 Strafanzeigen wegen Hasskriminalität

Politiker werden mit Hasskommentaren überschüttet, auch Vizekanzler Robert Habeck. Der Grünen-Politiker hat bereits in mehr als 700 Fällen Strafanzeige gestellt. Der Hass vergifte den Diskurs, sagt Habeck. „In einer Hasswelt spricht am Ende niemand mehr Probleme an und macht Vorschläge.“ Am 13. Juli, kurz vor 18 Uhr, zeigt das Postfach im Wahlkreisbüro von Vize-Kanzler und Wirtschaftsminister Robert Habeck (Grüne) den Eingang einer neuen Nachricht. Die Betreffzeile ist leer. Die Mail ist kurz und voller grammatikalischer Fehler. Sie endet mit den Worten: „Dein Kopf wird rollen, Du hast die Wahl, ob es friedlich verläuft, oder ob wir es mit Zwang verläuft. Wir werden dich hängen.“ Es ist eine von vielen Nachrichten, die Habeck derzeit bekommt – und zur Anzeige bringt. Nach Informationen von WELT hat Habeck seit April 2023 über das Bundeswirtschaftsministerium und über sein Bundestagsbüro mit der Hilfe spezialisierter Anwaltskanzleien etwa 700 Strafanzeigen gestellt. Unter den Nachrichten sind auch handfeste Drohungen. Im April des vergangenen Jahres schrieb etwa ein Mann, der sich in der Signatur selbst als „Hauptmann bei der Bundeswehr“ bezeichnet, dass er Habeck finden und „auf irgendeine Art & Weise zur Rechenschaft ziehen“ werde. „Kein Leibwächter wird Sie ggf. schützen können.“ Eine andere Person schrieb: „Du verdammter Irrer, gehörst standrechtlich erschossen! Du Hurensohn!!!“ Und in einer weiteren Mail heißt es in fehlerhafter Rechtschreibung: „Wenn die Deutschen Aufstehen, dann wirds duster um dich und deine verkrüppelte Familie.“ (…) Auf Anfrage der AfD-Bundestagsfraktion schlüsselte die Bundesregierung im Januar dieses Jahres weitere Zahlen des BKA zu Angriffen gegen Mitglieder und Repräsentanten der im Bundestag vertretenen Parteien auf. Mit 1219 Fällen richteten im vergangenen Jahr demnach die meisten Straftaten gegen Mitglieder der Grünen. Es folgten Straftaten zum Nachteil von Mitgliedern der AfD (478) und der SPD (420). Betrachtet man ausschließlich Gewaltdelikte wurden AfD-Mitglieder im Jahr 2023 am häufigsten attackiert (86 Fälle). Es folgten Angriffe auf Parteigänger der Grünen (62) und der SPD (35). Im laufenden Jahr sorgte vor allem der Angriff auf den Europa-Parlamentarier Matthias Ecke für Schlagzeilen. Der SPD-Politiker war im Mai mutmaßlich von Neonazis attackiert worden, als er Wahlplakate aufhing. Er trug schwere Verletzungen davon. Kurz vor dem Angriff hatten die mutmaßlichen Täter Schilderungen zufolge auch einen Wahlkämpfer der Grünen attackiert. Wenig später wurde in Sachsen ein Landtagsabgeordneter der AfD angegangen. Neo-Nazis Using Generative AI On TikTok To Reach 10s Of Millions

An independent human rights organization says TikTok is hosting and promoting neo-Nazi accounts that are denying the holocaust, glorifying Hitler, supporting white supremacist mass shooters and more. They’re also using generative AI, coded words and audio, and manipulated or obfuscated images to evade filters. “TikTok hosts hundreds of accounts which openly support Nazism and use the video app to promote their ideology and propaganda,” the Institute for Strategic Dialog report says. “This includes videos featuring Holocaust denial; glorification of Hitler, Nazi-era Germany, and Nazism as a solution to contemporary issues; support for white supremacist mass shooters, and livestreamed footage or recreations of these massacres. ISD says they found a network of “hundreds” of accounts after initially seeing just one neo-Nazi. And, similarly to how YouTube has been shown to be used by racists to amplify their messages, TikTok’s algorithm works to give people more of what they seem to like. That’s a self-reinforcing loop which leads to more and more of the same kind of content, and when it comes to hate speech or misinformation, the algorithm works exactly the same way on TikTok’s “For You Page.” “After viewing the pages of 10 accounts in the network and 10 videos total, a new dummy account scrolled through just three videos in TikTok’s For You Page (FYP) before receiving a recommendation for Nazi propaganda,” the ISD report says. “For a longer-standing dummy account which has engaged with more such content, most videos in TikTok’s FYP promote Nazism or hate speech.”When reported, TikTok is not taking the videos down, or at least not taking them down promptly, ISD says, despite TikTok’s community guidelines around hateful ideologies, promotion of violence, Holocaust denial, and more.

Our research began after finding one such account, which was expanded into a wider network of 200 accounts by examining the pro-Nazi accounts it followed and some of the accounts those accounts followed, as well as searching for violative content and using TikTok’s algorithm. Accounts were included in this study if they produced several videos expressly promoting Nazism or if they featured Nazi symbols in their usernames, profile pictures, etc. Key findings include: Pro-Nazi content is receiving tens of millions of views on TikTok. This includes videos featuring Holocaust denial; glorification of Hitler, Nazi-era Germany, and Nazism as a solution to contemporary issues; support for white supremacist mass shooters, and livestreamed footage or recreations of these massacres. Self-identified Nazis discuss TikTok as an amenable platform to spread their ideology which can be used to reach ‘much more people’, even if accounts are brand new or have a low following. TikTok is failing to take down violative videos and accounts, even when the content is reported by users. ISD reported 50 accounts in the network that violated TikTok’s community guidelines around hateful ideologies, promotion of violence, Holocaust denial, and other rules. The accounts, which collectively received over 6.2 million views, included those that either promoted Nazism in their videos or featured hate speech so long as they also included Nazi symbols in their profile pictures, usernames, nicknames or descriptions. After one day, all 50 accounts remained active, with all reports returning “no violation”. Accounts and videos promoting Nazism are algorithmically amplified, with TikTok quickly recommending such content to users engaging with similar far-right hate speech. After viewing the pages of 10 accounts in the network and 10 videos total, a new dummy account scrolled through just three videos in TikTok’s For You Page (FYP) before receiving a recommendation for Nazi propaganda. For a longer-standing dummy account which has engaged with more such content, most videos in TikTok’s FYP promote Nazism or hate speech. These videos often feature AI-generated media. This content frequently denigrates minorities and promotes Nazism, including, for example, an AI-generated translation of a speech from Hitler which continues to go viral. Such content helps modernize Nazi propaganda, reach a broader international audience and can be used to skirt platform moderation; TikTok Has a Nazi Problem Not only is TikTok’s algorithm promoting Neo-Nazi content, extremist organizations are also using the platform to recruit new members and encourage real-world action. Neo-Nazis and white supremacists are sharing Hitler-related propaganda and trying to recruit new members on TikTok, according to a new report from the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) shared exclusively with WIRED. The TikTok algorithm is also promoting this content to new users, researchers found, as extremist communities are leveraging the huge popularity of TikTok among younger audiences to spread their message. The report from ISD details how hundreds of extremist TikTok accounts are openly posting videos promoting Holocaust denial and the glorification of Hitler and Nazi-era Germany, and suggesting that Nazi ideology is a solution to modern-day issues such as the alleged migrant invasion of Western countries. The accounts also show support for white supremacist mass shooters and livestream-related footage or recreations of these massacres. Many of the accounts use Nazi symbols in their profile pictures or include white supremacist codes in their usernames.

Mit offener Queerfeindlichkeit reagiert die AfD auf die olympische Eröffnungsfeier – und wittert einen Anschlag auf das Christentum. Dabei hatte der kritisierte Showpunkt rein gar nichts mit dem Christentum zu tun. Am Wochenende zeigten führende AfD-Politiker*innen in sozialen Netzwerken ihre Abneigung gegen die Darstellung von Dragqueens bei der Eröffnungsfeier der olympischen Spiele am Freitagabend. (…) Noch schriller war freilich die Ablehnung in der AfD auf dem Portal X (früher Twitter): “Ekelhafter hätte es selbst das woke Deutschland nicht hinbekommen!”, giftete Martin Reichardt, der familienpolitische Sprecher der AfD-Bundestagsfraktion. Die Vize-Fraktionschefin Beatrix von Storch ergänzte: “Erst dieser Haufen Transen und dann die Verhöhnung der gesamten Christenheit. Was sind das für Leute, die sowas inszenieren?” Der bayerische Landtagsabgeordnete Hans Schmid schrieb: “Freunde, es ist das Mindeste, die Olympischen Spiele ab jetzt zu boykottieren! Der Streit in Frankreich offenbart Unkenntnis Rechtsextremer und Kirchenoberhäupter in griechischer Mythologie und heidnischer Kultur. Nein, es war nicht das letzte Abendmahl, das Dragqueens bei der Eröffnungsfeier der Olympischen Spiele am Freitagabend vorgeführt haben. Diese Szene soll die religiöse Gefühle mancher Katholiken verletzt haben. Frankreichs Bischöfe sprachen von einer Verhöhnung des Christentums. Rechtsextreme von Frankreich über Italien und Luxemburg bis nach Russland nutzten es politisch aus. Mittlerweile haben aber Spezialisten der Mythologie und Kunstgeschichte, etwa der französische Anthropologe Jean-Loïc Le Quellec (auf Facebook), und auch der Regisseur der Eröffnungsfeier Thomas Jolly (auf BFM-TV) die Dinge in ein ganz anderes Licht gerückt. Sie haben dabei die Ignoranz der Rechtsextremen in Sachen griechische Mythologie, keltisch-römische Götterverehrung und alteuropäischer Naturglauben entlarvt. In der dargestellten Szene handelt es sich absolut nicht um „Das Letzte Abendmahl“, so wie es Leonardo Da Vinci (1452-1519) in seiner Freske (1494–1498) im Refektorium des Mailander Dominikanerklosters Santa Maria delle Grazie dargestellt hat, sondern um „Das Festmahl der Götter“ des niederländischen Malers Jan Van Biljert aus Utrecht (1598-1671). Dieses Gemälde befindet sich im Musée Mangin in Dijon. Warum ist es „Das Festmahl der Götter“? Weil nur dieses Bild in den Kontext der Olympischen Spiele passt. Die Götter des Olymps feiern die Hochzeit von Thetis und Peleus, und in der Mitte des Tisches befindet sich nicht Christus, sondern der gekrönte Apollon als Sonnengott. Im Vordergrund liegt derweil Bacchus-Dionysos. In der griechischen Klassik wurde Helios mit Apollon gleichgesetzt, und der Apollon in der Szene bei der Eröffnungsfeier ist auch so dargestellt – mit Sonnenstrahlen am Kopf. Und da schließt sich ein weiterer Kreis zu Olympia und zum olympischen Feuer.

Elon Musk Shares Manipulated Harris Video, in Seeming Violation of X’s Policies

The billionaire owner of the social media platform X reposted a video that mimics Vice President Kamala Harris’s voice, without disclosing that it had been altered. Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, has waded into one of the thorniest issues facing U.S. politics: deepfake videos. On Friday night, Mr. Musk, the billionaire owner of the social media platform X, reposted an edited campaign video for Vice President Kamala Harris that appears to have been digitally manipulated to change the spot’s voice-over in a deceptive manner. The video mimics Ms. Harris’s voice, but instead of using her words from the original ad, it has the vice president saying that President Biden is senile, that she does not “know the first thing about running the country” and that, as a woman and a person of color, she is the “ultimate diversity hire.” In addition, the clip was edited to remove images of former President Donald J. Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, and to add images of Mr. Biden. The original, unaltered ad, which the Harris campaign released on Thursday, is titled “We Choose Freedom.” The version posted on X does not contain a disclaimer, though the account that first uploaded it Friday morning, @MrReaganUSA, noted in its post that the video was a “parody.” When Mr. Musk reposted the video on his own account eight hours later, he made no such disclosure, stating only, “This is amazing,” followed by a laughing emoji. Mr. Musk’s post, which has since been viewed 98 million times, would seem to run afoul of X’s policies, which prohibit sharing “synthetic, manipulated or out-of-context media that may deceive or confuse people and lead to harm.”

#TheBase, and the Basis for Listing Far-Right #Terror Groups

On 26 July 2024, the European Union (EU) added the group The Base to its list of terrorist entities, which now counts 22 entities (all foreign-based) and 15 individuals. This decision is particularly significant as this is the first far-right entity listed by the EU, indicating a change in the threat landscape and a clear political shift of counter-terrorism priorities.   The Base is already designated as a terrorist organisation by Canada (2021), the United Kingdom (2021), Australia (2021), and New Zealand (2022). Although the United States (US) considers domestic terrorism a key threat (including groups such as The Base), no domestic terrorist organisations are designated as such, which remains a contentious issue. This article offers some insights into the reasoning behind this EU decision, and its implications, as well as some background information on The Base.  What is The Base?  The Base is a networked organisation formed in 2018 in the US. It has come together as an alleged paramilitary/survivalist outfit, although its ideology is clearly inspired by neo-nazism, anti-semitic conspiracies, and “Siege Culture”.  Its members adhere to white supremacism, and are convinced that the white race is threatened by immigration, interracial marriages, and declining birthrates, amongst other issues. They see diversity in all its forms (including ethnic or sexual) as an existential threat, and as a remedy are keen to foster the emergence of a separatist and all-white ethnostate.  The group adheres to so-called “militant accelerationism,” that is, the usage of political violence or terrorism “in pursuit of the destruction of the physical manifestations [of..] modernity, liberalism, and capitalism.” Similar to several other far-right groups, such as Atomwaffen Division or Feuerkrieg Division, their strategy is to exploit existing crises and divisions within the society to effectively “accelerate” its collapse, in the hope of shaping a new world order on its ashes. Specifically, through acts of political violence and terrorism, they aim to provoke a race war, which they believe is already underway, to ensure separation of races, cultures, and ideologies into neat ethnically-based regions or states. Although the strategy of accelerationism is currently mostly associated to right-wing violent extremism, it is in fact common to many terrorist organisations sharing the belief that some fundamental revolution is underway, or possible, and that they constitute the vanguard to trigger it. On the jihadi side, this theory was notably articulated in Abu Bakr Naji’s “Management of Savagery,” which suggested the need to destabilise Muslim countries through terrorism in order to facilitate the emergence of a caliphate.   The Base is a transnational organisation, with a relatively small but international membership, mainly across North America, Australia and Europe. It has some structure and leadership, including a central “vetting process” for new recruits, but it also promotes decentralized “leaderless resistance” as a conscious model, that is the creation of small autonomous cells of two to three members in order to limit the risks of infiltration and criminal investigation by law enforcement services. This model is reminiscent of al-Qaeda’s system of franchises and relatively autonomous international cells, although on a lower scale. Interestingly, the name “The Base” is the English translation of “al-Qaeda” (it is unclear whether this was intentional or not, although one of the group’s leaders expressed admiration on social media for the jihadi group’s tactics).   Albeit US-centred, The Base’s ideas and narratives are transferable to other countries, facilitated by the use of English language in global online platforms (such as Telegram or Whatsapp). Some of the seminal works underpinning accelerationist groups, such as James Mason’s Siege, are available in English. English is also the lingua franca of the Terrorgram collective, a network of Telegram accounts promoting “accelerationist” ideas, which “produce[s] and disseminate[s] violent propaganda to encourage those who consume its content to engage in terrorist activity.” Terrorgram inspired the perpetrator of the terrorist attack against the LGBTQI+ community in Bratislava, in October 2022, and its members may have provided some practical assistance in the process of attack preparation.

The sanctions comprise a travel ban, a freeze of any assets in Europe, and a ban on EU citizens or companies providing funds to the group. The Base seeks “to accelerate the downfall of the United States government, incite a race war, and establish a white ethno-state,” the FBI said in court documents reported by the BBC.

Frankreichs Medienaufsicht gibt dem rechtsextremen Sender C8 keine Lizenz mehr. Dort tat sich der Produzent und Moderator Cyril Hanouna zunächst mit Unflätigkeiten hervor. Doch es wurde noch schlimmer. Teilen Merken Drucken Frankreichs Aufsichtsbehörde für audiovisuelle und digitale Kommunikation, die „Autorité de régulation de la communication audiovisuelle et numérique“, kurz Arcom, hat am Mittwoch die Liste der 24 Fernsehsender veröffentlicht, die 2025 eine Lizenz für digitale Übertragung über terrestrische Wege erhalten sollen. Zwei davon sind neue Anbieter, die restlichen haben sich mit Erfolg um eine Verlängerung ihrer Sendegenehmigung bemüht. Zwei bestehenden Kanälen jedoch verweigerte Arcom die Lizenz. Einer davon ist C8, Frankreichs meistsanktionierter TV-Sender. Von trashiger Unterhaltung zu Propaganda Die Programme, die der Moderator und Produzent Cyril Hanouna auf C8 anbietet, darunter die aus schlechten Gründen kultverdächtige Sendung „Touche pas à mon poste“, sind im Lauf der Jahre von trashiger Unterhaltung zu Propaganda für rechtsextremes Gedankengut entartet. Nicht von ungefähr gehört C8 zur Canal+-Gruppe des katholisch-fundamentalistischen und nationalistisch-identitären Milliardärs Vincent Bolloré. Zunächst begeisterte Hanouna mit Übergriffen unter der Gürtellinie grobe Gemüter und stieß feinere Geister ab. Einem Kolumnisten stopfte er etwa Nudeln in die Unterhose; einer Kollegin mit verbundenen Augen führte er die Hand aufs eigene Gemächt; vor laufender Kamera antwortete er am Telefon mit süßlicher Geziertheit auf Kontaktanzeigen ahnungsloser Homosexueller. Für letzteren „Ulk“, der den Respekt des Privatlebens wie die Auflage des Kampfes gegen Diskriminierung gravierend missachtete, belegte Arcom den Sender mit einer Geldstrafe von 3 Millionen Euro. Sturzbach von Kraftausdrücken Noch teurer zu stehen kam C8 Hanounas unflätige Beschimpfung des linken Abgeordneten Louis Boyard. Dieser hatte es gewagt, in „Touche pas à mon poste“ der Bolloré-Gruppe die Abholzung Kameruns anzukreiden: Unter einem Sturzbach von Kraftausdrücken jagte der Moderator ihn vom Set. Vor der Präsidentenwahl 2022 begann Hanouna, Politiker in seine Talkshow einzuladen – linke, rechte, vor allem aber rechtsextreme. Seitdem arbeitet der Moderator mit Themen wie Einwanderung und Unsicherheit, mit Justizpopulismus und Verschwörungstheorien, Antiintellektualismus und Experten-Bashing, nichtrepräsentativen Umfragen und Fake News dem Rassemblement national und anderen Parteien am rechten Rand zu.
