Neo-nazi leaflets attacking Jews have been distributed at a Canadian synagogue where an antisemitic gunman opened fire less than two weeks earlier. A Canadian synagogue where police thwarted an antisemitic massacre has been targeted again, this time with anti-Jewish propaganda produced by American neo-nazis. Antisemitic leaflets were plastered outside the Sons of Jacob synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, and scattered around the surrounding neighbourhood early on Thursday. The synagogue was still recovering from a potentially devastating attack less than two weeks earlier, when heavily armed former Canadian soldier Sean Ward opened fire on a police officer guarding worshippers gathered for Yom Kippur. Police have now described that attack as deliberate, premeditated and specifically motivated by hatred of Jews. Ward, 29, arrived with multiple weapons, substantial quantities of ammunition and gasoline. Around two dozen people were inside the synagogue. Before opening fire on Constable Jeff Smith, who was on duty outside the synagogue, Ward shouted: “You are going to die for the Jews.” Smith was ambushed while still in his vehicle and suffered multiple gunshot wounds, but continued exchanging fire with Ward for almost three minutes. A second officer, Michael McCurdy, arrived and joined the gunfight. Police believe their intervention prevented Ward from entering the synagogue and carrying out a mass killing. Ward was fatally wounded and died in hospital the following day. None of the worshippers was injured.
