#Counterterror police chief warns of ‘new and worrying trend’ of teenage neo-Nazis – #terror

Coronavirus has created a ‘perfect storm’ for online radicalisation, Neil Basu says. Teenage neo-Nazis are being arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences in record numbers as part of a “new and worrying trend”, the head of UK counterterror police has said. Assistant commissioner Neil Basu said children as young as 14 had been detained in the past year, and almost all of those investigated by police had been radicalised online. “We are seeing more young people being drawn towards terrorist activity,” he added. “That is a relatively new and worrying trend in the UK, because just a few years ago we were not seeing anyone that young amongst our case work. “What concerns me most is this – there has been a sharp increase in extremist material online in the last few years, and Covid-19 has meant that vulnerable people are spending a lot more time isolated and online, and with fewer of the protective factors that schooling, employment, friends and family can provide. (…) Official figures show that between January 2019 and June, 17 children under the age of 18 were arrested on suspicion of terror offences. The vast majority were thought to hold extreme right-wing beliefs, and police are urging families to seek help over any worrying behaviour using a new website and advice line. Senior officers are concerned that the coronavirus pandemic may mean that radicalisation is not spotted by teachers, social workers and mental health services because of ongoing restrictions. Earlier this month, a 17-year-old boy was jailed for preparing acts of neo-Nazi terrorism. Paul Dunleavy had researched how to convert a blank-firing gun into a live weapon, and provided “advice and encouragement” to fellow extremists online. He communicated with fellow neo-Nazis and joined the Feuerkrieg Division group, which was later banned as a terrorist organisation. In an online test to join, he wrote that Jewish people “must be eradicated”, called fascism “the pursuit of restoring the natural order”, and said he wanted to “go out there and provoke” a race war. Another teenager, Harry Vaughan, was arrested at the age of 17 last year for encouraging neo-Nazi terror attacks online.

Parler is filled with coffee shop talk for Nazis

I spent almost a week wading though the hate, lies and propaganda on the social networking site Parler in the aftermath of the 2020 election. Why would I subject myself to this? you might be asking. Am I that much of a glutton for punishment? No. I did it so you don’t have to or at least so you know what you’re getting yourself into if you make the move to Parler from Facebook or Twitter. Since Twitter began fact checking President Donald Trump, much to the chagrin of many of his supporters, conservatives have been flocking in droves to Parler. The site is essentially a Twitter clone that bills itself as a “free speech social network.” The site is being billed as a Facebook or Twitter replacement for good, sound minded, hardworking conservatives. It’s not. It is a hotbed of radicals who want nothing more than to radicalize you too. Don’t be fooled. The problem here is not with the conservative slant of the site. There’s nothing wrong with that. The problem is the Nazis and conspiracy theorists. Or as Bill Gates put it during an online forum Tuesday, “It’s a choice you’re making. If you want Holocaust denial, it’s going to be great for you.”
Yes, legitimate conservative commentators and lawmakers use this website to offer insight, but so do actual white supremacists and other extremists. Within 24 hours of signing up, Parler recommended pro-Nazi content to me. More legitimate users could cut down on Nazi content, but that’s unlikely. Say, for instance, you have a favorite coffee shop where you meet on Sunday afternoons with friends, family or church members. One weekend, you find the shop has been allowing Nazis to meet in the back room. Do you stop going there? Do you check out the Nazi meeting? Do you ignore the Nazis and go about your normal routine? Do you tell everyone you go to the Nazi coffee shop? Parler is a coffee shop with a sign on the door saying “Nazis welcome.” The site recommends content with hashtags — this thing # — followed by trendy keywords or phrases. The more you click that content, the more similar recommendations the site gives. It’s a never-ending rabbit hole where the user is fed an endless string of rotten carrots dangling from the ends of sticks.

Trump taps ex-staffer with supremacist ties to monitor Holocaust sites

The Anti-Defamation League called on Trump to rescind Beattie’s appointment to the commission, which CEO Jonathan Greenblatt called “downright shocking.” President Donald Trump has nominated Darren Beattie, a former White House speechwriter who attended a white supremacist conference, to a government commission that monitors Holocaust sites. Beattie, who identifies on Twitter as a “proud Jew,” attended a conference of the H.L. Mencken Club in 2016. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the conference “has hosted some of America’s most prominent white nationalist ideologues in the past, and serves as a safe space for professors to vent their racist views.”
Beattie appeared at the conference on a panel with Peter Brimelow, a white nationalist who runs the anti-immigrant website VDare. He worked as a White House speechwriter until shortly before CNN revealed his participation in the conference in 2018. Beattie has written multiple essays defending Trump’s travel ban on several Muslim-majority countries. On Wednesday, Trump announced that he was appointing Beattie to the Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad. The commission identifies and works to secure the preservation of historical sites in Europe, such as cemeteries, monuments and Holocaust killing sites, that are associated with the heritage of US citizens. It was established out of concern that European governments might neglect Jewish sites due to the legacies of the Holocaust and communist repression. The Anti-Defamation League called on Trump to rescind Beattie’s appointment to the commission, which CEO Jonathan Greenblatt called “downright shocking.”

‘Snake, Nazi, Traitor’: Margaret Hodge reveals extent of anti-Semitic abuse

“This abuse is not normal. This is why zero-tolerance matters. This is why people have to take responsibility for their actions.”. Jewish Labour MP Margaret Hodge said a zero-tolerance approach is needed towards anti-Semitic abuse after she was sent death threats online following criticism of ex-leader Jeremy Corbyn. The 76-year-old politician shared some of the vile abuse she has been targeted with, including death threats and anti-Semitic accusations she was a “member of a rich & powerful Jewish dynasty” and “evil personified”. She said: “This abuse is not normal. This is why zero-tolerance matters. This is why people have to take responsibility for their actions.”
‘Zero tolerance matters’ It comes after Corbyn was reinstated as a Labour member three weeks after he was suspended over his response to a scathing Equality and Human Rights Commission report. However, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has refused to allow his predecessor back into the parliamentary party. Dame Margaret, the parliamentary chair of the Jewish Labour Movement, has been an outspoken critic of Corbyn and suggested she would have left the parliamentary party had Sir Keir readmitted him. (…) After Dame Margaret shared the abuse she has received, a number of fellow Labour MPs voiced support for her. Birmingham Yardley MP Jess Phillips said: “Love to Margaret who is, amongst others in the Jewish community, the actual victim of all this.” Shadow schools minister Wes Streeting added: “Unconditional love and solidarity for Margaret. What I’ve found most disconcerting this week is that, in addition to this vile abuse, people who are meant to be serious – former MPs, NEC members etc – have seen fit to troll Margaret and even demand her silence. They’re no better.”
