Oliver Janich, who is banned from YouTube and has 150,000 Telegram subscribers, had been previously involved in attempts to establish a community of Germans who share his worldview. One of Germany’s most notorious far-right conspiracy theorists has been arrested in the Philippines, in the latest legal drama to hit the German conspiracist scene. Oliver Janich, considered one of the most influential and radical conspiracy ideologues in the German-speaking world with about 150,000 followers on Telegram, was arrested on Wednesday morning at a resort on the island of Tablas. The 53-year-old former financial journalist, originally from Munich, has been based in the Philippines for a number of years, where he’s reportedly been involved in attempts to establish a community of German-speakers who share his worldview. The circumstances of Janich’s arrest, as well as his current location and legal status, remain murky. Police in the Philippines did not respond to a VICE World News request for comment by time of publication. In Germany, the Munich public prosecutor’s office confirmed that Janich is under investigation on suspicion of criminal insult and public incitement to commit crimes, relating to his calls on Telegram for the execution of politicians. But the office would not comment on whether these investigations had any link to the arrest. Janich has also been under investigation in the Philippines, for matters including tax evasion, according to German media outlet Tagesspiegel.
