Two 18-year-old men are facing charges of bias crime after vandalism was reported at a Jewish center in Ashland on Dec. 14, 2023, according to the Ashland Police Department. Police say video evidence from the scene and surrounding businesses shows three people walking up to the Chabad Jewish Center. One of them throws eggs at the building while yelling “Heil Hitler.” Investigators posted video of the incident on social media and police said the suspects were identified almost immediately as 18-year-old Zachary Demarest of Corvallis, allegedly the person who threw eggs and yelled a Nazi slogan, and 18-year-old Jacob Wilhelm of Blackfoot Idaho. A third person in the video was also identified, but was not charged with a crime. Both men were students at Southern Oregon University at the time, and shortly after the incident, they left for winter break.
