Wie die Polizei zuvor mitgeteilt hatte, war es bei der Flucht am Mittwoch (Ortszeit) zu einem Schusswechsel gekommen, bei dem drei Gefängnismitarbeiter verletzt wurden. Sie warnte die Bevölkerung vor den bewaffneten und gefährlichen Flüchtigen. Diese hätten gezeigt, dass sie bereit seien, »extreme Gewalt« anzuwenden. Den Schilderungen der Polizei zufolge wurde der Gefangene Skylar Meade nach einer Behandlung aus dem Krankenhaus in der Stadt Boise eskortiert, als Schüsse fielen. Der »koordinierte Angriff« habe sich direkt vor der Notaufnahme ereignet, sagte der Polizeichef der Stadt, Ron Winegar. Der Komplize habe auf zwei Gefängnismitarbeiter gezielt, die schwer verletzt worden seien. Anschließend sei der bewaffnete Angreifer gemeinsam mit dem 31-jährigen Meade in einem Auto geflüchtet.
