Devenir Europeo, which has links to other groups across Europe, is meeting at a secret address in Barcelona. Spain’s only legal neo-Nazi group may escape legislation which was designed to ban organisations which lionise fascist dictators. Devenir Europeo, which has about 80 members in Spain and links to other groups across Europe, is meeting on Saturday at a secret address in Barcelona to celebrate fallen comrades who supported Hitler and the Third Reich. A snap election next month may prove a boost to groups like Devenir Europeo and the Foundation Francisco Franco, which safeguards the memory of the late Spanish dictator. A series of polls have shown that the conservative People’s Party (PP) may win the largest number of votes but to form a government they may have to call on the support of the far-right Vox party. If they win power, the PP has promised to repeal the Democratic Memory Law – introduced by Spain’s left-wing coalition government in 2022 to tackle the legacy of General Franco, who ruled the country for nearly 40 years until his death in 1975. The law, which contains a ban on organisations that champion fascist leaders, was designed to prohibit the Franco Foundation but could apply to Devenir Europeo.
