Hosting services aren’t always easy to come by for dissident populations. One service has withstood the test of deplatforming campaigns and Internet censorship laws. Although they ostensibly support “freedom of speech” — to the Nazis, “freedom” is contingent on assimilation. Zensurfrei CEO, Gary Lauck, claims to value freedom of speech. His ability to network, build coalitions, and disperse terrorist material and Nazi propaganda is significant. Lauck’s NSDAP-AO clearly demonstrates his own values, contrary to American values of freedom.
To the Nazis, remaining “censorship free” comes only at a cost — and as far as a domain name service goes, it is an expensive price to pay. Zensurfrei, a mid-size webhost, is responsible for anonymizing and offering security to a large number of extreme right wing and neo-nazi websites, materials, and admins. It began with Gary Lauck in 2001 as a web hosting platform. In German, “Zensurfrei” translates to “censorship free”. Their website boasts of offering affordable services to otherwise denied users: “[Zensurfrei] is the first fully managed and secure web hosting provider for those denied access to mainstream hosting due to “offensive” content.” (…) Many users of this service, however, are also strong Nationalists, far right ideologues, and other political dissidents without neo-Nazi leanings. Due to their financial support of Zensurfrei through their patronage, as well as the highly suspect activity of the company’s founder and CEO, these users have the right to their privacy and separation from such a characterization. The CEO himself however, as well as many of his patrons, are open neo-Nazis.
