Six people were killed and 12 others were injured in a mass shooting in downtown Sacramento early Sunday, transforming a busy section of the central city into a horrific crime scene of blood, shattered glass and grieving relatives. Police Chief Kathy Lester said there were no suspects in custody. Shortly before noon, police announced they’d recovered “at least one firearm” at the scene but didn’t release any details. Lester said it wasn’t immediately clear if the victims were deliberately targeted, or how many shooters were involved. The shootings took place in the vicinity of the 1000 block of K Street, near a strip of nightclubs close to such Sacramento landmarks as Golden 1 Center and the Capitol. Police said they were looking into the possibility that a fight or altercation took place just before the shooting. “Right now our investigators are arriving at the scene,” Lester told reporters on the scene a few hours after the incident. “This is very preliminary.” The shooting — among the worst in Sacramento history — happened just after 2 a.m., but details about the exact location of the incident occurred have not been confirmed. The shooting scene was strewn across a two-by-four-block area, with broken glass and police markers on 10th Street from K to L, as officers work the scene; police were also investigating at 12th and K streets.
