Bulgaria: Nationalists honor pro-Nazi general with flowers

Far-right nationalists have again gathered in Bulgaria’s capital to honor a late World War II general known for his anti-Semitic and pro-Nazi activities. Braving sub-zero temperatures, hundreds of dark-clad supporters of the Bulgarian National Union group flocked to a central square where they had planned to kick off the annual Lukov March, a torch-lit procession held every February to the former house of Gen. Hristo Lukov. The mayor of Sofia suspended this year’s procession, allowing only the laying of flowers at the house. Police split participants into small groups and escorted them. Earlier Saturday, dozens of anti-fascist activists demonstrated against the nationalist event, chanting slogans like “No Nazis on our streets.” A heavy police presence blocked any clashes between the two sides. Neo-Nazis and like-minded extremists have marched for almost two decades in honor of Lukov, who supported Germany during World War II and was killed by members of a resistance movement on Feb. 13, 1943. The general served as war minister from 1935 to 1938, and led the pro-Nazi Germany Union of Bulgarian Legions from 1932 until 1943.

Info – The world isn’t a disc”, zu Deutsch “Die Welt ist keine Scheibe”.

Palm Bay man arrested at Orlando airport for role in U.S. #Capitol #riot – #terror

A Palm Bay man who authorities say went inside the U.S. Capitol during a riot by supporters of then-President Donald Trump was arrested Wednesday at Orlando International Airport. Steve Omar Maldonado, who also goes by Emilio Maldonado, was arrested at the airport by FBI agents, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in an email. He is facing charges of entering a restricted building and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds. At a hearing Wednesday, a federal judge ordered Maldonado’s release but restricted his travel to the Middle District of Florida and court appearances in Washington D.C., court documents show. He was also banned from having any firearms and ordered to surrender his passport. Maldonado was also appointed a public defender. According to business records and a company website, he is a charter boat captain who offers diving and spear fishing trips on the Treasure Coast. He is at least the thirteenth person from Florida to be arrested for the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol, according to a Justice Department list of defendants charged in federal court in the District of Columbia. FBI agents say Steve Maldonado, who is wearing a white hat in this photo, was arrested Wednesday after being accused of going inside the U.S. Capitol during a riot by loyalists of then-President Donald Trump (Photo courtesy of FBI).
Two people who knew Maldonado recognized him in television news coverage of the riot and took pictures of him, which were later sent to FBI agents Jan. 17, according to an arrest warrant. One of them also identified Maldonado in the FBI’s photo collection of individuals wanted in connection to violence at the Capitol, the complaint said. Authorities said a third person who knew Maldonado received videos he recorded inside and outside the Capitol building, including inside the U.S. Senate chamber. Those videos were later provided to the FBI. Agents said Maldonado was also captured on surveillance video wearing a white hat that said “Trump,” according to the warrant. The FBI says surveillance cameras captured Steve Maldonado inside the Capitol building wearing a white Trump hat (Photo courtesy fo FBI). During an interview with agents, Maldonado said he and his friend attended the “Stop the Steal” rally where Trump urged his followers to “fight like hell” and march to the Capitol building in an attempt to stop Congress from certifying Joe Biden’s presidential victory.

Five more charged in #Capitol riot allegedly teamed with #Kansas City #ProudBoys #terror

Thousands of Donald Trump’s supporters, including Proud Boys members, storm the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, in support of baseless claims that Trump, not Joe Biden, had won the 2020 presidential election. Five people worked with Proud Boys from Kansas City and other unnamed individuals to breach the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, U.S. prosecutors alleged, unsealing charges Thursday in one of the largest co-defendant cases yet brought in an investigation in which more than 200 have been charged. The defendants, wearing helmets, vests and tactical gear marked with fluorescent orange tape, “appeared to gesture and communicate to one another” to coordinate efforts during and after forcing entry to the Capitol, the FBI alleged. Surveillance footage showed at least four taking actions to prevent police from deploying descending metal barriers to seal off underground access to the Capitol, allowing the invading crowd to surge forward, the FBI said in a 28-page affidavit dated Wednesday. The arrests of William Chrestman, Christopher Kuehne, Louis Enrique Colon, all of Kansas City, and siblings Felicia and Cory Konold bring the number of those affiliated with the Proud Boys to nearly 18 among those charged with battling law enforcement and obstructing the electoral vote confirmation of President Biden’s victory.
Federal prosecutors and the FBI have accused self-identified Proud Boys of leading some of the earliest, most destructive and critical efforts to overrun police lines and break into the Capitol building. Two have been charged with counts listed as federal crimes of terrorism, relating to destruction of government property to intimidate or coerce the government. Charges for the Kansas City group were unsealed after all five were taken into custody. Information about their lawyers was not available, and efforts to contact relatives were not immediately successful. The Proud Boys, a far-right group with a history of violence, was embraced by former president Donald Trump during the election campaign, and it mobilized to attend the Jan. 6 events in D.C. Proud Boys leader Henry “Enrique” Tarrio, who was arrested two days earlier for allegedly having burned a Black Lives Matter banner torn down from a historic church during a previous rally in Washington, has pleaded not guilty and denied that the Proud Boys organized any violence at the Capitol.

Impeachment Trial Ends With Senate Acquitting Trump

While impeachment managers provided a systematic breakdown on how Trump’s conduct for four years culminated in the Capitol riots, they failed to get the 67 votes needed to convict. Former President Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial ended on Saturday afternoon with him being acquitted of the single charge of inciting supporters to storm the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. The decision to acquit Trump came after five days of contentious proceedings, hours of edited videos, and a bizarre abandoned plan on Saturday to call witnesses on the House Democrats’ behalf. While impeachment managers provided a systematic breakdown on how Trump’s rhetoric throughout his four-year term culminated in his incitement of the Capitol riots, they failed to garner the 67 votes needed to convict. The outcome was hardly a surprise. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told colleagues on Saturday morning he planned to join 43 other GOP senators who had already said the unprecedented trial was unconstitutional. Six Republicans had voted that the impeachment trial was constitutional—Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Ben Sasse (R-NE), Mitt Romney (R-UT), Pat Toomey (PA). Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) joined them on Saturday to vote to convict Trump.
In a statement, Burr said that he initially believed it was “unconstitutional’ to impeach an ex-president but he believes “the facts are clear.” “As I said on January 6, the President bears responsibility for these tragic events. The evidence is compelling that President Trump is guilty of inciting an insurrection against a coequal branch of government and that the charges rise to the level of high Crimes and Misdemeanors,” he wrote. “Therefore, I have voted to convict. I do not make this decision lightly, but I believe it is necessary.” Burr added that Trump “violated his oath of office to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution” by what “he did and by what he did not do” during his term.
